It was a great experience of being a part of such an incredible event which connected us to many others with brilliant minds and creative ideas.🌟 This prestigious event brings together the brightest minds from across the nation to solve real-world problems using technology and innovation. As the coordinator, I witnessed the power of collaboration and creativity as teams tackle challenges ranging from healthcare and agriculture to education and smart infrastructure.  I had the fantastic opportunity to participate in #Symplatform2024, an insightful online symposium led by Daniel Trabucchi Trabuchi and Tommaso Buganza. Academics and practitioners came together to discuss the evolving world of digital platforms. This incredible community fosters dialogue around various platform purposes and perspectives, from circular economy platforms and open-source business models to AI governance and power dynamics in platform ecosystems. The key findings from my research highlight how Virtual Business Incubators (VBIs) can act as digital empowerment platforms, equipping rural women with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to overcome personal and business challenges and contextual barriers. My analysis identifies the VBI’s value proposition and utility dimensions, collectively enhancing network value. VBIs can serve as pivotal agents in fostering inclusive entrepreneurship and driving socioeconomic transformations in rural communities. For scholars, practitioners, and policymakers, this study demonstrates how digital technologies can be harnessed to unlock entrepreneurial potential at the intersection of gender, geography, and technology. Hackathon in cities !!! In April 2023, the City of Phoenix Office of Innovation collaborated with Venture Café Phoenix to launch the Innovate #PHX Challenge. This series of all-day hackathons brings together participants from diverse backgrounds to develop innovative solutions to the city's top challenges and priorities. The first three #hackathons drew over 500 participants, including citizens, start-ups, enterprises, academics, and students, who developed ideas and solutions to build resilience to rising urban temperatures as well as research and develop affordable housing options. Becoming a #smart_city does not require a city to resemble a science fiction film. #Phoenix is taking a comprehensive, thoughtful approach, incorporating strategic data use and cutting-edge smart technologies where appropriate, and delivering solutions such as streamlining processes and improving services, all while blending seamlessly with the natural environment to improve quality of life. #Collaboration is particularly important in this area since we can learn from one another, adapting ideas from other cities and sharing our own best practices with others. FHL team member Dr. Alex Ryan recently attended the Future of Labs retreat, which brought some of the world's top lab leaders together to explore how to design more impactful practices. Here are a few of his top takeaways: "At the Future of Labs gathering on Cortes Island, we discussed the expectations of lab impacts. If you see labs as vehicles for scaling up innovations, they seem slow and inefficient. However, labs actually build the capacity for system transformation. They create connections that help systems collaborate and deliberate across different areas. Labs provide examples of what’s possible, expanding our vision for a more just and sustainable future. Instead of just scaling ideas that fit within current flawed systems, they contribute to redesigning systems to allow many new ideas to thrive - while hospicing old systems that need to die. If your impact measurement is only focused on scaling new ideas, you will miss the most important contributions of social innovation labs to systems change."
