Work in Aviation? THEN READ THIS. Most of us can hardly remember the case in 2020 when #Iran shot down a #Ukrainian plane that departed from one of its own airports. We know who did the terrible deed. But this legal decision should strike fear into every flight operating with either of the following criteria. A - into and out of Canada and B - with Canadian citizens on board. The law can some times be an ass. While the logic can be expressed and understood - I believe that in this case the judge was just wrong within the ruling and has set very dangerous precedent. Do we now need to exclude citizens of a country because of some judge in that country making a deterministic decision with impacts far outside of its responsibility? ICAO and different countries need to step in to correct this situation. Canada must live up to its treaty obligations. https://lnkd.in/gyBm4CkP #ICAO #IATA #Internationallaw #Treaty #Canada #precedent #PS752

Ukraine hopes to restart commercial flights from Kyiv as soon as possible Having ceased all commercial flights from its airports when Russia invaded the country in February 2022, Ukraine’s plans for the restart of commercial passenger operations from its main airport in the capital city Kyiv, are reported to be gathering pace and getting closer to reality. Inspired by Israel’s lead in continuing passenger flights despite being involved in a conflict, Ukraine has begun talks with European Union and US authorities over the restart of commercial flights from Kyiv Boryspil International Airport (KBP). According to reports published in the Kyiv Post newspaper, the vital negotiations have begun, setting Ukraine on a path to seeing both its own airlines and those from other countries return to the skies over the capital city. These reports cite Alexander Kubrakov, the Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction and Minister for Community, Territory, and Infrastructure Development, who is reported to have made the return of commercial air services a key objective for the country in 2024. In addition to consulting with the EU and the US on any proposed restart, it is understood that Ukraine has consulted with the Israeli Civil Aviation Authority. Those talks have been commenced to assist the Ukrainians in getting a better understanding of best practices for the safe airport operation in Kyiv while it remains under the threat of hostile rocket attacks. Extract : "[...] China's civil aviation administration said in a short statement late Tuesday that from Thursday it was cancelling an "offset measure" for the southbound operation of the M503 #FlightRoute, which is just west of the strait's median line. The median line had for years served as an unofficial barrier between Chinese-claimed Taiwan and China, but China says it does not recognise its existence and Chinese warplanes now regularly fly over it as #Beijing seeks to pressure #Taipei to accept its sovereignty claims. When international aviation fails due to the stupidity of politics, and it does so quite often. The latest case concerns Africa's largest airline, Ethiopian, which has a fine tradition of naming a new aircraft after the first destination it flies to. This is what happened with a B787-9 named Tel Aviv. Lebanon's aviation authority found fault with this and ordered the aircraft to be unidentified, otherwise it would be prohibited from taking off from Beirut. Ethiopian was pragmatic enough not to let the aviation authority rebook the passengers on other locally available means of transportation such as rockets or goats. The same applies to the United States, which recently asked Biman Bangladesh not to fly over Iran. Quite comprehensible, but they continue to tolerate Lufthansa or Turkish, which not only fly through Iran, but also directly to Tehran and the USA. In the same way, Emirates or El Al continue to fly to Moscow and the States. Similar incidents of planes landing with politically sensitive inscriptions on the fuselage are rare, but they have caused a stir in the past. A similar incident occurred in 2018 when an Iranian airline sent a plane to Athens with the name “Persian Gulf” written in Persian on the fuselage, causing diplomatic tensions. In 2014, a similar incident caused a controversy when a Turkish plane landed in Azerbaijan with the name “Ararat” written in Armenian on the fuselage, sparking political tensions. Even in 2024, this shows how many countries have not even arrived in the 20th century. What other crazy weirdness can you think of? Separate AOCs for China and Taiwan? The use of Russian airspace by Chinese (and other) airlines needs to be addressed through appropriate restrictions or regulations. China not only enables and supports Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine but also gives its carriers an unfair competitive advantage. With shorter flight times and reduced operating costs, Chinese airlines (many of which are state-owned) benefit at the expense of European and other international carriers that are currently not able to use the same routes. It’s time for a level playing field in aviation, where the principles of fairness and international solidarity matter. https://lnkd.in/gTpYQqqu
