The world committed to transition away from fossil fuels at Cop 28 to abate a climate crisis. The transition will require investment in financing and extraction of critical minerals necessary for battery, solar panel and wind turbine manufacturing. The extraction of critical minerals can potentially give rise to environmental and social impacts locally and globally. How do we finance the transition? On September 11, a UN-convened panel released key recommendations to guide governments and industry in ensuring that the global energy transition, driven by the demand for critical minerals, is pursued with equity, justice, and sustainability. The recommendations aim to support fair value chains for essential minerals like copper, lithium, and cobalt, which are vital for clean energy technologies. Key Points: - The report emphasizes fairness and justice across mineral value chains to foster sustainable development and respect human rights. - It proposes a global framework for transparency, accountability, and traceability to ensure responsible mining and mineral use. - Developing countries with large mineral reserves are encouraged to seize the opportunity to create green jobs and diversify their economies. The UN Secretary-General called for these principles to be discussed with member states ahead of COP29. Ever been in a situation where you needed to take a pill to cure an ailment, yet the intake of that pill results in a side effect that is almost as severe as the ailment itself (particularly where the side effect is not properly managed). This paints a picture of the impact of energy transition globally. Whilst some persons, countries, organizations appear to be reaping the benefit, others face threats to their economic and social development. This underscores why the transition must necessarily be just, orderly, inclusive and equitable. Following the renewed resolve to end fossil fuel at the recently held COP28, African oil producers are one of the hardest hits given the enormous fossil fuel reserve in the region.   In this piece, we Chukwuemeka Osuji Faith Jane A. and I, Chinenye Ajayi at #OALP analyzed the impact of the resolutions reached at the COP28 on African oil and gas producers as well as the mitigation strategies to navigate the energy transition.  #sustainableenergywithCA, #energytransition #COP28

Without proper management, the increasing demand for critical #minerals risks deepening geopolitical tensions and environmental and social challenges.
