Have you ever entered into a negotiation without having any alternatives? Does it ring any bell? 🤔 Yes, I am sure many of you have heard of the Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement, or BATNA. BATNA is a term introduced by Roger Fisher, William Ury, and Bruce Patton in their groundbreaking book "Getting to Yes". Someone will say, "OK, this is why I am entering into a negotiation, to close a deal. Why do I need a BATNA?" The simple answer is "If you do not work on your BATNA, you are preparing yourself for disaster!" 😰 Let me put that into context. Suppose midway through your negotiation your counterpart realizes that they have no available capacity to meet your product demands and they only remembered to tell you just now! Or so they say. Since you have not identified your BATNA, you have nowhere to go. You are sitting idle not knowing what your next move should be. You are stuck. The deal in the end is a no-deal and you have wasted valuable resources for nothing. Your superiors are waiting to hear some good news. Obviously, this is a tough situation you do not want to get into. This is only a simple example to get the whole idea of not having determined your BATNA beforehand. After all, you want to be fully prepared and not taken by surprise before entering the negotiation stage. Stand by for more regarding BATNA and negotiations in general.
