The SAS Journal Club will form a 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 and networking between Students and Early career researchers in Archaeological Science and aims to host discussions on 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀, 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 in a friendly, informal environment. All SAS members are welcome to participate in the SAS Journal Club: - Undergraduate students, who want to join the SAS for the first time can 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘂𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘄 and benefit from an SAS membership until the end of 2025. - Membership cost for postgraduate students is 20$ USD. Prof Rosa and I I first met Prof. SRD Rosa face to face during my MPhil viva as he was one of my examiners. After couple of technical questions related to my research, he asked what were my future plans. I said, “I wanted to get married and do my PhD afterwards”. Somehow my answer made him laugh with the rest of the people in the board room of Faculty of Natural Sciences, The Open University of Sri Lanka. Afterwards, I did not meet him for a long time. I still wonder whether he could remember this incident as I was one of many students who faced viva with him as an examiner. Then during 2020, one of my good friends, Tharaka Gamage contacted me for an academic project to translate Prof. Rosa’s MCQ reviews of 20 years into English medium. I was really delighted and accepted the challenge to finish with several deadlines. Honestly, it was really a good learning experience to myself as a physicist as I was exposed to numerous solving methods of nearly 1000+ MCQs in GCE A/L Physics papers from 2000-2020 while doing the translation. As a student, I wondered why I could not get a good result to Physics during my three attempts of A/L. I found the answer during my undergraduate days even though I did A/L in bio stream. Physics is a hard subject. There is no doubt about it. Yet, you need to identify different solving techniques with your general knowledge. Sometimes you need to deviate from the conventional way of solving problems too. In fact, you need to be brave enough to think out of the box and justify your answer in a logical manner using your analytical skills. This is what I have been trying to teach as a lecturer to my Physics students using real world examples. In a way I am trying prove that “Life is more beautiful with Physics!” which has been my tagline for over a decade in Physics popularization. *** Creationism *** Education Statement from the American Physical Society Revision Approved by the Council on Nov. 10, 2021 The Council of the American Physical Society opposes proposals to require “equal time” for presentation in public school science classes of the biblical story of creation and the scientific theory of evolution. The issues raised by such proposals, while mainly focused on evolution, have important implications for the entire spectrum of scientific inquiry, including geology, physics and astronomy. In contrast to “Creationism,” the systematic application of scientific principles has led to a current picture of life, of the nature of our planet and of the universe, which while incomplete, is constantly being tested and refined by observation and analysis. This ability to construct critical experiments, whose results can require rejection of a theory, is fundamental to the scientific method. While our society must constantly guard against oversimplified or dogmatic descriptions of science in the education process, we must also resist attempts to interfere with the presentation of properly developed scientific principles in established guidelines for classroom instruction or in the development of scientific textbooks. We therefore strongly oppose any requirement for parallel treatment of scientific and non-scientific discussions in science classes. Scientific inquiry and religious beliefs are two distinct elements of the human experience.
