WHAT IS CERT? The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. Youth Can Be Red Cross Ready, too! Each year, the American Red Cross responds to an average of more than 60,000 disasters, most of which are home fires. Knowing this, the Red Cross provides free disaster emergency preparedness education to help youth take action during emergencies and foster safer communities by sharing what they have learned with family and friends. Traditionally, our preparedness presentations are offered in-person to youth across the country and abroad. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have developed an interactive presentation for students grades 3–5 or ages 7–11 years old. Topics discussed in this presentation include: an introduction to the American Red Cross, proper hand washing techniques, a guided coping skills activity and home fire preparedness safety education. Ask your local Red Cross chapter for the Household Preparedness Workbook and learn how to be Red Cross Ready for Emergencies.

Emergency personnel, brace yourselves! The way we train for emergencies is about to transform forever. Emergency responders, know that every situation is unique and requires a different set of skills to handle it. Making it impossible to prepare for every scenario. Or is it? We're excited to share the early development of V1 of our XpertVR XpertAuthoring tool, which will revolutionize the way we train our first responders. Our team will now be able to work with firefighter and police officer training professionals to create new and completely unique scenarios in weeks, if not days, instead of months. In the long run, this tool will allow training professionals to create their own unique scenarios in minutes, further enhancing the training experience. With this tool, we aim to bridge the gap between theoretical training and real-world emergency situations. Our goal is to ensure that every emergency personnel is equipped with the skills and knowledge to handle any crisis that comes their way. The U.S. Fire Administration's National Fire Data Week is June 23-29. This year's focus is on the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS). With NERIS, incident data, when analyzed, provides the intelligence needed to inform a fire department’s strategies and tactics. By participating in a national incident reporting system, fire departments can compare their performance and outcomes across varying incident types, times of day, and at different staffing levels. NERIS will empower the fire and emergency medical services community by providing reliable analytics to support enhanced preparedness, prevention and response to all-hazard incidents, wildland urban interface events, Community Risk Reduction efforts, climate change threats and associated resilience and mitigation efforts, and future pandemic emergency response resource preparedness. Dash, our SAFER Water Warrior, has some crucial tips for emergency planning: "If you haven't thought about what you would do if there was an emergency in or around water, here are my top tips!" - If a child is missing, check any water areas FIRST – seconds count. - Ensure everyone who cares for your child, including you, knows CPR. - Have an Emergency Action Plan in place, especially if you have a backyard pool. - Ensure all the other layers of protection are around your child – supervision, barriers, and swimming skills – dealing with an emergency is the last line of defense. Today’s preparedness point to ponder: Have you ever wondered how you could help your city or community during a natural disaster or the aftermath of one? There are a few organizations that you can look into for some incredible opportunities. Look at organizations such as the Red Cross, Blood Assurance, ALAN, and Samaritan’s Purse. These organizations have a nationwide reach and opportunities to match. If you are looking for something more close to home, check and see if your county or city has a CERT. This stands for Community Emergency Response Team and typically is comprised of volunteers from that immediate area. I am part of my local CERT here in Walker County, Georgia. Here, you train for various skills such as fire suppression, first aid/cpr, search and rescue, mass casualty events, etc. The training alone is worth joining. Consider if one of these organizations might be a good fit for you and then reach out and speak with a representative. You’ll be happy you did.
