Scientific research indicates that managers of non-profit institutions require a set of components, characteristics, leadership and management skills, in addition to a deep understanding of social issues. In his book, “Effective Leadership in Nonprofit Organizations,” author John Carney, explains that strategic vision and the ability to build effective partnerships are essential tasks. For example, researcher Peter Frankel, in his study “The Nonprofit Leadership Transition and Development Guide,” considers that an organization’s manager’s understanding of social issues and the environment in which it operates enhances his effectiveness. It also points out the importance of developing the ability to communicate and build a team. Therefore, the director of non-profit organizations needs a “set” of skills and qualities, including dedication to the social mission, and a deep understanding of social issues. Stop founding nonprofits. Before you found a nonprofit to get into Stanford, here are five questions you need to answer. Because as a skeptical admission reader, I’m thinking you only did this to get into college. #1 Need: Was there a genuine need?  Make sure there’s not already someone addressing the problem you care about. If there is, I’d start by connecting with them. See where that work leads. Maybe you open a chapter in your community, maybe you take on a leadership position, maybe experts at that organization direct you to another opportunity to help.   #2 Motivation: Why did you feel compelled to create a non-profit?  There are many ways to organize a group of people with a cause and give it a name. Why did you create a legal entity? And why a 501(c)(3) or a “non-profit”? I’m an attorney, I can think of reasons. But you’re a teenager, what are yours?   #3 Means: How did you create it?  If you don’t tell me, I’ll assume your mom hired a lawyer to do all the work for you. That doesn’t mean you can’t get help. I can think of one smart approach: Reach out to a pro bono clinic at a law school--especially if it's at the school you want to attend.   #4 Impact: Have you helped people? You can’t just have a website. You need evidence of impact. Have you partnered with 10 hospitals? Helped 1000 students? Provided 10,000 meals? You can measure "impact" in lots of ways. Numbers is often a good way to quantify impact. But I'm sure you can think of others.   #5: Longevity: What happens when you go to college? Your nonprofit can’t disappear. What’s your plan? Younger students taking over? Will you stay involved? This is where having professionals from recognized organizations on your Board can help.    If you have good answers, then starting a nonprofit might make sense. But if not, a nonprofit can backfire. You've made a skeptical admission officer twice as skeptical. So, you'll need to do more work in your application to prove you're for real. There are many other ways you can show initiative and impact and leadership without founding a nonprofit—or founding anything at all. To be clear: I'm not saying every student who founds a nonprofit is a phony. I've seen serious nonprofits that did make sense over the past 15 years. And it is impressive. But those are rare. I also recognize you can do things that are both strategic for college admissions and also authentic activities you care about. My main point: Be thoughtful. There are already so many nonprofits doing important work. And they need help. This very important article came out today. If you are a nonprofit CEO or ED or sit on a nonprofit Board this data matters and is very telling. There is also a section specific to challenges for NPO leaders of color. Every org can use this data to strengthen their Boards and support their teams better! Personally, if I were sitting on a Board and read this, the first thing I would do is pick up the phone, call my CEO/ED, ask how they are doing, and ask how we can best support them, and then follow through with my fellow Board members. This matters. Think of this as an action you can take for Mental Health Awareness Month! Key Takeaways: 1) Nearly 2/3 of the nonprofit leaders in the survey say the country’s polarization — over politics, race, and culture — is making their work more difficult. 2) Nearly 40% of leaders say fundraising demands are a significant source of job dissatisfaction. 3) 9/10 leaders say they feel tremendous pressure to succeed, and nearly as many (88%) agree with the statement that “the demands made on nonprofit CEOs, executive directors, and presidents are never-ending.” 4) Nearly 40% say their boards aren’t engaged.
