🌍 Exciting developments in UK environmental regulations! Here's a snapshot of the latest updates following yesterdays WEEE conference, attended by our Environment Compliance Consultant Jianhong Hu: 🔍 DEFRA: Reviewing UK WEEE EPR reform consultation results starting April. Focus on cracking down on online-marketplace sales and stricter regulation of Vape devices. Stay tuned for potential Battery EPR reform consultation. 📝 Environment Agency: Monitoring WEEE compliance via audits, highlighting compliance risks for Vape devices. Transitioning to "WEEE online" portal for registration/reporting, with new categories for Vape and online marketplace producers. 🛠 OPSS: Enforcing EPR take-back requirements, emphasizing distributors' obligations. Current crackdown includes warning letters and unannounced visits, with a large UK supermarket chain leading with in-store Vape collection bins. 🏢 Local Councils: Initiating take-back services, with limited uptake among stores. Council support includes providing bins and launching communication campaigns. However, OPSS notes retailers' primary responsibility for take-back. ♻️ Green NGOs: Advocating for VAT exemption on reused/refurbished WEEE and establishment of repair index/Eco-design standards. Emphasizing testing/grading of old devices by local authorities. Distinguishing between WEEE reuse and recycling practices. 💼 Producers: Expressing concerns over proposed free doorstep WEEE take-back requirements, citing financial burden and storage concerns, especially for smaller retailers. 📢 The European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM) has released the 2nd edition of its guide, "Metals and Alloys Used in Food Contact Materials and Articles". This updated guide helps regulators and industry align standards to enhance the safety of food contact materials in Europe. Key updates include: 🔹Revised safety limits for chromium and manganese 🔹 A new section on zirconium 🔹 Improved testing methods for accurate metal release evaluation The revision was led by the CD-P-MCA, in line with the Council of Europe Resolution CM/Res(2020)9. UPDATE ON PFHxA RESTRICTION IN THE EU! On February 29th the EU Member States has voted in favor of restricting the use of undecafluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), its salts and PFHxA-related substances. The initial PFHxA restriction proposal was introduced by the German authorities in 2020 and supported by ECHA’s scientific committees in 2021. Once entered into force, the restriction will ban the placing on the market and use of PFHxA, its salt and PFHxA-related substances in different articles and applications such as: -      textiles, leather, furs and hives for the general public -      footwear for the general public -      paper and cardboard used as FCMs -      mixtures for the general public -      cosmetic products Additionally, the placement on the market and use of this class of chemicals in specific fire-fighting foams (FFFs) applications will also be banned - with some exceptions (e.g. for SEVESO establishments).
