Empowering Children, Parents, and Families | Child Life Specialist | Therapist | Supporting Resilience and Well-being
**Show, Don’t Tell: The Key to Helping Kids Learn and Thrive** I recently attended a training by best-selling children’s book author Miriam Laundry. One of the pearls of wisdom that stuck with me was “show, don’t tell.” In a children’s book, this means utilizing images and words to help children understand the story. As a child life specialist and therapist, I couldn’t stop thinking about how this saying, "show, don’t tell," holds a powerful truth in parenting and raising strong, kind, and confident little humans. When we show children how to navigate challenges, express emotions, or engage with the world around them, we provide a living example for them to emulate. Actions speak louder than words, and kids are incredibly observant and absorbent. They learn best by seeing principles in action. Here are a few ways to put this into practice: 1. Demonstrate Emotional Regulation: Show your child how to manage frustration, anger, or disappointment with patience and empathy. 2. Model Healthy Habits: Let them see you taking care of your mental and physical health. 3. Be Kind and Respectful: Interact with others in a way you’d like your child to imitate. In my work with children and parents, I’ve seen firsthand the profound impact modeling behavior can have on children rather than merely instructing it. By embodying the behaviors and values we wish to instill, we create a nurturing environment where children can learn to be the best versions of themselves. Let’s commit to being the role models our children need by showing them, not telling them. #ChildLifeSpecialist #ParentingTips #ChildDevelopment #ShowDontTell #PositiveParenting #ParentCoaching #Childtherapy #Childcounselling
