Power for a bargain: the first day of the National Energy System Operator "Ed Milliband finds himself in a very different environment from the last time he was in government. Along with the wealthy Crown Estate and the new Great British Energy (GBE), we must consider NESO as the closest and most powerfull ally to the government. " I wrote more about that on my new substack open entries: https://lnkd.in/eh_-BhmF The media points to its technical importance given the ambition of net zero target: https://lnkd.in/eEgr2iTQ But I cannot avoid thinking of the political effects: strengthening the state in ways we only speculated when I wrote "In plain sight" with industry veteran John Rhys https://lnkd.in/e7fVSvZK But I wonder if other people consider the nationalization of the National Energy System Operator a political game changer or only a technical fix for the system. If you have a thought, I'll be keen to read it in the comments.

I found this newsletter from David Spinks on ROE (Return on Energy) massively insightful. Check out a snippet below 👇 "Where we invest our time also has a Return on Energy (ROE). You need more energy back than you put in. It’s a fundamental rule of our minds, hearts, and bodies. Violate this rule and your passion will die. .... Practice: Take 15 minutes today to write down all of your big commitments then rate each one 1-10 on the question, “What is the Return on Energy?” See if anything shifts."

Great read. It was interesting to read up on earlier renewable energy implementations and how untapped Hydro projects evolved in North America. The unintended consequences of Hydro developments should be reflected on to make sure we learn from our mistakes and responsibly develop technologies. The pace of change and how competing interests interacted through the different eras was elucidated beautifully in the book.
