The list goes on and it's different for everyone! But, unfortunately, stereotypes can put people in boxes. They often don’t reflect all of the dimensions of who we are and can limit our potential. That’s why facilitators of Secret Agent Society work with the premise that we are all unique! The entire program is designed to help children understand themselves and learn how to respect everyone as a unique individual. Originally designed for children with autism spectrum cognitive profiles, we’ve seen it help many different types of children feel happier, calmer, and more confident in themselves and around others. #autism #neurodiversity #secretagentsociety Image description: The words, "You can be autistic and want to have friendships, have a sense of humour, be part of a team, recognise emotions, and solve social problems," are featured against a bright orange background. Autism is not a singular experience. It's a spectrum, diverse and rich with unique perspectives. Today, I want to shed light on autism in boys, a topic close to my heart. Let's start by dispelling a myth. Autism doesn't always look the same in every child. Boys with autism might not fit the stereotype of being nonvocal or disinterested in social interaction. Many are incredibly social, creative, and full of curiosity! Being aware of early signs can make a significant difference. Parents and educators, keep an eye out for: Delayed Speech: Not all boys with autism are nonvocal, but many might have delayed speech development. Repetitive Behaviours: Fixations on certain objects or activities could be a sign. Exceptional Focus: They might have intense interests in specific topics. Hypersensitivity: Loud noises or bright lights can be overwhelming Early intervention and understanding are crucial. It's not about changing these incredible individuals but providing them with the tools to thrive. From sensory-friendly environments to tailored educational plans, support can transform lives. Diversity is our strength. Let's celebrate the unique perspectives and talents of boys with autism. They are artists, scientists, athletes, and dreamers with so much to offer the world. Together, let's build a world where every boy, regardless of where they fall on the spectrum, has the opportunity to shine brightly. #DrZiffySays #autismawareness #autisminboys #autism

Autism is a spectrum condition that can affect social interaction, communication and learning processes. It generally appears in the first two years of life, explaining the term ‘developmental disorder’. Autism is a spectrum disorder because there is a wide variation in the type and severity of signs people experience. On this day, we want to remind you once again, Autistic people have many strengths. The most common ones are being strong visual and auditory learners, excelling in math, music, and art, and easily learning things in detail and remembering information for long periods. Autistics unfortunately can still face discrimination and barriers across all parts of society. Let’s use this day to educate ourselves about Autism, appreciate differences and make a more inclusive world! #autismawarenessday

You may have seen infographics like this around and we love them, as the Autism spectrum is not linear! It looks different for everyone. ❤️ Image: A blue and orange slide with two colourful graphs. The top on is titled, ‘What people think the autism spectrum looks like’, with a linear graph labelled, ‘less autistic’ to ‘more autistic’. The one underneath this is titled ‘What it can actually look like’, with a round wheel, labelled with, ‘Language’, ‘Social Differences’, ‘Executive Functioning’, ‘Special Interests’, ‘Sensory needs’, ‘Repetitive Behaviours’, ‘Emotional Regulation’, and ‘Perception’. #autismawareness #autismeducation #autismabilities #positivebehavioursupport #neurodiversity #neurodiversityaffirming

Autism & Neurodiversity Mentoring, Consultancy, Talks and Workshops for Employers, Employees, Teachers, School-Leavers & Students | Autism Lived Experience Education & Inclusion
As the parent of an autistic child (who is now an adult), I was delighted to witness how the faces of other parents at this year’s The Autism Show lit up when I asked about their autistic son’s or daughter’s strengths. Their initial expressions of concern and worry completely changed when they told me about their offspring's talents. The words used to describe their skills were ‘unbelievable’, ‘mind-blowing’, ‘so impressive’, etc. A considerable spectrum of strengths was mentioned here, such as art, engineering, mathematics, languages, and so on. I intentionally didn’t ask about struggles, as Callum and I want to make people aware that autistic and other neurodivergent individuals must be appreciated for their often outstanding talents and not judged on their struggles. Our society puts too much focus on weaknesses and the energy spent on eliminating these, often unsuccessfully, is taken away from nurturing talent. This is especially true for neurodivergent people. I have to quote Einstein here (yet again 😬): “If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.” This message really hit home with the parents at the Autism Show and always does with everyone we talk to at other events. Do you agree? #DiversityAndInclusion #autism #AutismAwareness #Neurodiversity Image Description: Caren holds up and points at a print showing a black silhouette of a bushy tree with a white fish in the middle. The fish is crying black tears.

It’s World Autism Day and many people are having discussions about how we can remove barriers for autistic people in society. We believe that a lot of great work can start in schools. According to data from the National Autistic Society in the UK, only 26% of autistic people feel happy at school and 70% experience mental health problems. By helping children, teachers, and families to understand each other, we aim to help autistic children work towards their own life goals and feel good about it. People often think differently to one another and Secret Agent Society helps people understand other thinking styles, opening the door to better communication and relationships with a range of people in life. The program isn’t just designed for autistic and neurodivergent children - it can be used with any child with social or emotional goals. It also equips families, carers, mentors, teachers, and classmates with the skills to understand each other. The mission? To see all children playing to their strengths and moving towards their goals! #secretagentsociety #worldautismacceptanceday #autism #neurodiversity Image description: A child holding onto chemistry equipment while sitting at a school desk and wearing safety glasses.

Manual for understanding Societal Expectations Understanding the rules of society can be challenging, especially for those on the autism spectrum. Unlike neurotypical individuals, they don't seem to have been given a manual to understand and follow and can struggle to make sense of social expectations. As a result, it's essential to help and support people with autism to understand these rules and navigate society better. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive and understanding world. #autism #socialexpectations

When discussing autism, it's common to emphasize the difficulties autistic individuals encounter. However, recognizing their strengths is equally important and beneficial. Autistic individuals are distinctive and gifted in their own ways. Many autistic individuals exhibit unique talents, abilities, and interests that are not typically found in non-autistic individuals. Each person is different, but some common strengths in individuals with autism include: *Proficiency in math and technical skills *Deep interest or expertise in specialized topics, *Strong visual processing skills *Imaginative and creative thinking *A keen eye for detail *Personal qualities such as honesty and loyalty. Recognizing and focusing on these strengths can be incredibly beneficial. #AutismStrengths #Neurodiversity #InclusionMatters #AutismAwareness #UniqueTalents #FocusOnStrengths #CelebrateDifferences

🌈 Embracing Diversity Within Our Own Family: The Gift of Autism 🌟 As we celebrate the diversity that shapes our world, I feel compelled to share a very personal aspect of diversity that has profoundly enriched our family life — having a loved one with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Autism has opened our eyes to different ways of perceiving the world, teaching us invaluable lessons about patience, understanding, and the beauty of seeing life through an unfiltered lens. Here are a few remarkable ways this journey has enriched our family: 🧩 Unique Perspectives: Our family has learned to appreciate the small details of life that we previously overlooked. The unique way our loved one with ASD views the world has encouraged us to pause, reflect, and cherish moments we might have missed. 💡 Innovative Problem Solving: Facing the world with a mind that works differently has led to creative problem-solving strategies that are as unconventional as they are effective. This has inspired us to think outside the box and find joy in innovation. 🌱 Growth Through Challenges: Navigating the complexities of autism together has strengthened our family bond, teaching us resilience and the true meaning of support. Every challenge overcome is a victory for all of us, highlighting the power of unity and love. 🎨 Appreciation for Diversity: Understanding and embracing the spectrum of autism has deepened our appreciation for all forms of diversity. It’s a constant reminder of the strength found in differences and the importance of creating inclusive environments everywhere we go. 📚 Lifelong Learning: Our journey with autism is filled with continuous learning. From understanding sensory needs to communicating effectively, every day is an opportunity to learn something new about each other and the world. 🤝 Empathy and Connection: Perhaps the most profound lesson has been in the art of empathy. Living with and loving someone on the autism spectrum has taught us the true value of connection, understanding, and unconditional love. To families embarking on a similar journey, know you're not alone. To communities and organizations, let's continue to advocate for inclusivity and support for individuals with ASD. The richness they bring to our lives is immeasurable, and the world is undoubtedly a better place with their unique contributions. We celebrate diversity in our home and continuously work toward creating a world where everyone is appreciated for who they are. 💖 💙 #WorldAutismDay2024 #DiversityAndInclusion #FamilyStrength #ActFearlesslyforChange #UnderstandingAndAcceptance
