Prioritizing your mental and physical health during the work week is a game changer. During a few stressful years of acquisitions, new companies and new jobs I felt I had to consistently be available to prove myself. What that got me was declining mental and physical health. The past 5 months I've been prioritizing myself again. Block off time a few mornings a week to workout, 10 min here and there to get up and go for a quick walk during the workday. I eat breakfast, I prioritize eating lunch and drinking water. It has made me a better mom, spouse, person, employee and manager. Just here to remind you that your are more than your job. You are worth investing time for yourself during the work week to take care of YOU.

This is sad and unfortunately it can result in PTSD which explains why when someone hears of another similar story is basically retraumatised and relives their own story. This is trauma but the good part is that once recognised trauma can be overcome. There are a number of therapeutic approaches that can deal with trauma. Addressing the issue is not the main problem but recognising the issue for what it is unfortunately it can be. Hence, education and awareness is key.
"Working somewhere, or for someone, that’s toxic can’t be a long-term set-up. That’s because, when it truly is toxic (and not just, 'ugh, I hateee my booossssss'), every day, little by little, you can feel a piece of you chip away and eventually you can end up feeling like you’ve completely lost the person that you were when you first started there – and not in a good way. When you finally get to step out of that work environment, whether that be because you’ve moved onto a new job with a new company, you’ve decided to go at it alone and work from home, or maybe just because you’re so run-down and fed up of everything, that you need some time away from work altogether for the wounds to heal. A really common thing that I’ve found both from personal experience and from others talking to me about their work environments is that they find, even once they’ve flipped off the boss and resigned from their hellhole job, that creative spark and overall confidence is completely shot and is absolutely nowhere to be seen." So where do you go from there?

The signs of workplace burnout + stress look and feel different for everybody. You may experience some of these items but feel GREAT at work; or you may feel something completely different but know work is weighing heavily on you. There's no right or wrong and there's no one-size-fits-all. The important thing here is to take the time to check in with yourself. Notice how you feel when you think about your upcoming work week, or when you feel anxious or on edge. Label the emotion - what are you feeling? Is there something specifically triggering it? If you do feel some ick around work and know it's affecting your life inside + outside of your job, know that while you cannot control everything related to work, there ARE a lot of things you can control. Follow Ace of Wands, LLC to learn throughout this month what some of these controllable pieces are 🧩

Sometimes, you need to let things fail 🙈 Are you a person who ends up saving the day or taking on more work to cover for others? I know I was. I used to wear it as a badge of honour. When I started working in Futures support, we had 6 team members covering 6.30 am-6.30 pm - early and late shifts. Over two years, that number dwindled. Every time we lost someone, me and a colleague filled the gaps. We worked double shifts and covered 16 straight weekends. It didn’t matter that we were chronically stressed and sleep-deprived - we thought we were hardcore. Until finally - it was only us left. 2 people covering the work of 6. Our ego and reluctance to let things fail blinded us. We didn’t want management to think we couldn’t handle it. And yet, through our own doing, we ensured the team lost headcount. This experience taught me a lot, and sadly, it’s all too common with many well-intentioned individuals. Perhaps you can relate. You might think you’re saving the day. Take a moment to see what the true impact of your actions is. By papering over the cracks, you could be blocking something that needs to happen. Don’t be scared to communicate limits or ask for help. And maybe, just maybe, there are more important things in life you could be prioritising. #stress #career #coaching
