Are You Experienced? When I first moved to the States in 1993, I first needed to get myself an H1B visa, which meant I needed to convince an American employer to hire me. With two years of professional programming experience, that should have been easy, but people didn't want C programming, or dBase/Clipper programming. They wanted Visual Basic. That was apparently the Hot Thing in 1993. I did a "coding interview" with a company over the phone. The woman interviewing me asked me a number of questions about Visual Basic. I guess I passed, because they offered me a job, got me a visa, and I moved to New York. I didn't know even one single thing about Visual Basic. I had never written even one line of code in it. When I met the client, in-person, he simply asked me: "How well, on a scale from 1-10, do you know Visual Basic?" I said "10." After working for the New Jersey-based client of this company for several months, I was burnt out from the 12-hour days and bus commuting 90 minutes each way from NYC out to the woods of New Jersey, and I quit. My boss at the client company called me, offered to doubled my salary and a space in his Wall Street office. Because me and my team of six had re-written a large system in Visual Basic, and replaced a much larger group of programmers with our hard work and demonstrated programming skills. We had both made, and saved, the company a lot of money. After working in New York for some time, I accidentally met the engineer from the consulting company who had interviewed me over the phone a couple of years prior. We chatted for a while, and I admitted to her that I had not known anything at all about Visual Basic when I interviewed with her. She laughed and told me that she also had known nothing at all about Visual Basic, and hadn't even known whether my answers were correct. We both had a good chuckle about that. And it always reminds me that even if I'm not experienced, and might fail a test or a live-coding session in some language, I can very likely do the actual job. #programming #visualbasic
