This post is a great reminder of just how connected where I was is to where I am now- it showed up from a part of my network here that I formed in my past research on memory care- I barely recognized it as NOT part of my current career in human centered design! The truth is, working with the person you are trying to better the experience of, and those that make the experience possible, is the most fruitful way to get there- whether that is a new product, or designing a plan of care.
Have you come across this thought-provoking image depicting different approaches to serving people? It really resonates with our perspective on power dynamics! The image illustrates four ways of serving people: It's a powerful reminder of the diverse approaches to serving and empowering others. #PowerDynamics #Service #Collaboration 1. Deficit: Actions done to people, focusing on their limitations. 2. Charity: Actions done for people, providing assistance and support. 3. Coproduction: Actions done with people, emphasizing collaboration and shared decision-making. 4. ABCD (Asset-Based Community Development): Actions done by people, harnessing their strengths and capabilities.

Building bridges, not walls - A fresh perspective on community engagement. Often, when businesses turn their attention to community outreach, they get caught up in the idea of 'us vs them'. They see themselves as separate - the benefactors, offering support to those in need. But what if we changed this perspective? Community engagement is not about charity, but connection. It's not about throwing resources at a problem but standing shoulder to shoulder with our neighbors and facing issues together. This means real dialogue, genuine collaboration and shared goals. In my experience with church leadership and beyond, I've seen the profound impact of this shift. When we start seeing ourselves as equal parts of the community - not separated by walls of difference but connected by bridges of commonality - magic happens. Resources are used more effectively, projects have greater impact and both parties learn and grow in the process. Let's break down walls and build more bridges. Let's turn community outreach into next-level engagement. Join hands with your community today. It may just be the best business decision you've ever made.

🔥What are the best approaches to Community Engagement? The most overlooked? Having worked with the UN and with small local nonprofits in Baltimore, I've found the definition of "community" might shift, and that there are as many approaches as there are types of community. Whether you tend toward a pithy take on what works, like the 3 Cs (collaboration, consultation, and communication), or you prefer the deeper dive of ABCD (Asset-Based Community Development), the fact is that making the desired impact with your nonprofit or social enterprise depends a great deal on your success in engaging community stakeholders. ↳Social Media has made some parts of this easier–and many parts of it more difficult. ↳We’re all battling media overload. So many of us are over-committed in a world that needs our energy, our innovation - how do we draw people to the work ahead?
