Thank you once again to Bill Leedham, P. Geo. QPESA, CESA Leedham, P.Geo., QPESA, CESA, for delivering an invaluable session on drilling techniques for collecting soil samples as part of a Phase II Environmental Site Assessment (ESA). Protecting the environment and safeguarding human health from the spread of contamination is not just a responsibility—it’s a fundamental right for everyone. Conducting thorough Phase I and II ESAs ensures that industrial growth progresses hand in hand with environmental sustainability. Phase I ESAs focus on identifying potential contamination risks through historical and current site investigations, including reviews of land use, records, and initial inspections. When these investigations indicate possible contamination, Phase II ESAs involve sampling and analyzing soil, groundwater, and other media to confirm and delineate the presence of contaminants. The knowledge gained from these assessments helps developers, environmental consultants, and stakeholders make informed decisions. It not only supports compliance with environmental regulations but also helps in planning for remediation, reducing liability, and fostering trust within communities. By addressing contamination early in the process, we can pave the way for cleaner, safer industrial development that aligns with principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Technical and research activities go hand in hand with governance: how can ports manage environmental issues effectively, having relevant technical stakeholders and political actors involved in the process? Starting from the experience of the Interreg EUROPE TANIA project (https://lnkd.in/dZr9wzGr), TREASURE ports are implementing the concept of mini-labs ⚗ representing the sum of equipment- skills-institutions- actors- roles involved in environmental testing. Partners are now in the process of negotiating with relevant authorities, and local agreements for the implementation of TREASURE are going to be finalised and signed within the end of the year 🏆 🏆 🏆

"Although KSM's environmental assessment received federal approval in 2014, we required further federal authorization to incorporate natural fish habitats into our Tailings Management Facility. We got that key permit in 2017 by agreeing to replace lost natural habitats with twice as much capacity in man-made ones.
