Initial Thoughts on the Los Angeles Wildfires note this is a slightly edited version from the January 11, 2025 posting News of the ongoing catastrophic wildfires in the Los Angeles area has dominated the media. It is heart-wrenching to think about those impacted directly, as well as their families and friends waiting for updates. And it is a stark reminder – following other major wildfires in Australia, Canada, Greece, Hawaii, California and elsewhere over the last several years – of the significantly increasing frequency and severity of these catastrophic events globally. As firefighters continue to battle the flames in Los Angeles, we need to take a closer look at this horrible event. Specifically, what made these fires so intense, how rare are wildfires in January in the western United States, why have they now impacted a major metropolitan area, and what are some of the potential implications for the insurance sector? The attached document captures initial perspectives.
