A trip to Mars could damage an astronaut’s kidneys, experts say London: Although we know that the absence of water and oxygen cannot support human life on Mars, the effects on our bodies far outweigh these problems. We know that astronauts’ bones and muscles weaken due to space travel and the lack of gravity, while cosmic radiation increases their risk of cancer and affects the immune system. Now scientists have discovered that it can also damage the kidneys. Research conducted by a team of kidney specialists at University College London recently published their report in the journal Nature, showing that long-duration spaceflight can permanently damage human kidneys, even That an astronaut going to Mars might have to be on dialysis upon return. Lead author Keith Siew said, “On Earth, we knew that radiation was so dangerous to the kidney that we took precautions before radiation therapy, but we’ve done a lot of research on kidney health in spaceflight.” did not pay attention to the effects of Keith and his team examined humans and mice that went to the International Space Station for various experiments. The researchers then looked at some experiments on Earth in which the kidneys of animals were exposed to radiation. In the results, the researchers found some major changes in the kidneys. They found that two proteins in the kidneys, which are responsible for processing calcium, became completely inactive. Second, they noted major changes in a part of the kidney called the distal convoluted tubule (DCT), which regulates sodium and blood pressure. DCT becomes smaller in space. Elderly female Patient of mine seen today at Charles Stuurt University Dental School 2/52 following partial mandibular symphyseal mandibulectomy for Bisphosphonate Related osteonecrosis of the jaw . Treatment with bisphosphonates for multiple myeloma . The pathology specimens show extensive osteonecrosis and an aggressive surgical approach ( which I have demonstrated here) in my opinion is one’s best hope of saving the remaining bone. I use several weeks of post op oral clindamycin. On the recent Space Medicine Course , I was surprised to learn from NASA astronauts, that Bisphosphonates are routinely prescribed for long International Space Station Missions because of significant bone loss at Zero G . In our discussions on the Mars Missions, I did raise some concerns that losing a jaw on Mars is a non survivable event. Lately, I have been getting into all things gut health and came across a review on gut permeability among astronauts during space missions! The space environment causes dysbiosis, characterized by a decrease in SCFA-producing bacteria and an increase in gram-negative bacteria, which leads to heightened inflammation. The longer the space mission, the more severe these effects become, highlighting the urgent need for interventions to protect gut health during extended space travel. Key Findings: 1. Inflammation, reduced mucin-related genes, altered mucin structure, and changes in tight junction genes 2. Increased expression of inflammatory cytokines 3. Mice studies mirrored these trends, showing the challenges of maintaining gut health in microgravity. ‘Superbug’ discovery raises ‘health concerns’ for Sunita Williams, others aboard ISS Astronauts on the ISS, including Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams and her colleagues, face heightened health risks due to the presence of this superbug. Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-Madras) and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are conducting a pivotal study on a ‘superbug’, a multidrug-resistant pathogen discovered on the International Space Station (ISS). The research has raised significant health concerns for astronauts, including Sunita Williams, currently aboard the ISS. The study of this pathogen also holds potential implications for managing similar threats on Earth. The Superbug: Enterobacter bugandensis The pathogen in question, Enterobacter bugandensis, is a common nosocomial bacterium known for its resistance to multiple drugs. This superbug has been found on various surfaces within the ISS, posing a unique challenge to the health and safety of astronauts. Detection and Investigation The presence of E. bugandensis on the ISS was highlighted in a new scientific paper funded by an Ames Space Biology grant. Dr. Kasthuri Venkateswaran, Principal Investigator at NASA’s JPL, spearheaded this research, isolating and studying strains of E. bugandensis from the ISS environment. The study revealed that the strains had mutated and become genetically and functionally distinct from their Earth counterparts due to the extreme conditions of space. Research Collaboration and Findings The collaboration between IIT-Madras and JPL brought together experts like Professor Karthik Raman from the Department of Data Science and AI at IIT-Madras, Dr. Kasthuri Venkateswaran from JPL, and research scholars from both institutions. Their study, published in the scientific journal Microbiome, indicated that E. bugandensis strains not only survived but thrived in the ISS environment, co-existing with other microorganisms and potentially aiding their survival.
