📈 The global medical simulations market is expected to grow from $2.33B in 2024 to an estimated USD $4.43B in 2030. 🧬Cadavers have been used for training surgeons of all proficiencies for generations. Recently, advances in preservation techniques and novel reanimation methods have expanded the ways in which cadavers can be utilized for this larger goal of surgical training. Additionally, discoveries of safer compound mixtures that extend the lifespan of cadavers while posing a lesser toxic threat to surgical trainees has increased the eagerness to use cadavers, even in the face of virtual reality simulation options. 🩺A holistic approach to medical education will be required as surgical techniques blend human guidance, knowledge, and coordination with robotic tools. The entire spectrum of tools (from cadavers to virtual reality) is being leveraged by medical institutions, military trauma units, and R&D facilities at medical technology companies as progress to provide optimal patient care continues to accelerate. A recent study published in Annals of Surgery evaluated the quality of narrative feedback in surgical residency programs at Queen's University. Analyzing 3,900 assessments over five years, it was found that only 57% of these feedback entries were of fair quality, with an average Quality of Assessment of Learning (QuAL) score of 2.22±1.39. The study highlights that feedback quality did not significantly evolve over time (r=-0.067, P=0.402). Factors impacting feedback quality included the attending's role, the assessor’s and learner’s concordant specialties, and the timing of assessment post-encounter. These findings suggest a critical need for ongoing faculty development to enhance the effectiveness of formative assessments in competency-based medical education programs. Consultant Radiologist at Cedarcrest Hospitals Abuja. Fellow, Interventional Radiologist @MUHAS Tanzania .
Can't be better said. I now look and report PE with an entirely different perspective; is there right heart strain or not , massive or submassive PE, which treatment will the patient qualify for based on the radiological findings-systemic therapy or IR based treatments. The same goes for looking at hepatic tumours and many more pathologies. Interventional Radiology is definitely reshaping my diagnostic radiology expertise. Even though one can't be a good interventionist without first being a good diagnostic radiologist.
The importance of Interventional Radiology (IR) education in Europe cannot be overstated, as it is a cornerstone of radiological practice. IR boasts a storied history and is unparalleled in its range of minimally invasive treatments. However, the neglect of IR education can have dire consequences beyond the loss of tradition. Without active preservation of our clinical competencies, radiologists risk devolving into mere service providers, potentially leading to the obsolescence of the diagnostic radiologist by other medical disciplines. Consider the implications: a vascular surgeon's confidence in a radiological report is contingent upon the radiologist's understanding of procedures like Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) versus open aortic repair. E.g. Knowledge of when and how an Endoleak (EL) should be treated is crucial. Believe me! These are not exaggerated concerns; such gaps in knowledge are often evident in non-IR reports. As seasoned professionals, often trained in interventional departments, we have a responsibility to advocate for the integrity of our field. We must resist the trend of commodifying radiology, where financial gain is prioritized over patient care, leading to the erosion of our profession's foundation. For those in the vascular specialty, achieving the European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR) qualification is just the beginning. Strive for excellence—complete your Expertise in Specialization (e.g. ES). Let's uphold the standards of our discipline and ensure its future. #CIRSE #EBIR #radiology #vascular #endovascular
