Protecting time and energy for creativity at work has always felt like a fight, now it's a dance. Less convincing and justifying, more grace and fluidity. Natalie Nixon, PhD said it best, “I see creativity as the ability to toggle between wonder and rigor to solve complex problems.” Holding creativity in tension with efficiency is a "Way of Being." There's a list of 6 of these statements that guide the way we show up for our work at Stoked. We check in with ourselves monthly by running through the list and asking, "am I being this way?" for each. When talking about company values, I tend to glaze over. I tend to believe that intrinsic motivations, personal morals and convictions have way more influence on one's work that a list of vague ambitions for all. But I have to give credit to this list of intentions—it has refocused our behaviors and refined our culture. And it's earned us a Nashville Best in Biz!

Last time I was there, we listened to some great live music at one of the bars on Broadway Street where the band's lead singer got up on the bar and got the crowd really engaged in the music. Plus, AFP puts on great conferences. This will be my 12th conference as a speaker for AFP, and I'm excited! Who else is speaking at the conference? Fundamentally, the army thrives on a rigid enforcement of rules and directives, meticulously designed to achieve objectives with unwavering precision and minimal room for error. Contrastingly, Metallica, as a band, operates within a fluid and adaptable framework during their performances—where rules can be challenged and altered spontaneously by any band member. The dichotomy between the structured discipline of the military and the dynamic improvisation within a musical performance may seem worlds apart, yet exploring these differences can unravel unexpected parallels and insights. I stumbled upon an intriguing interview featuring Metallica on Howard Stern’s show. His words instantly transported me back to my army days, reminding me of a fundamental lesson ingrained during that time: everything we did was rooted in trust. As one of my lieutenants often emphasised, 'I don't have to like you, but I do have to trust you.' In the civilian and corporate realm, trust is often misinterpreted. Many leaders believe that attaining trust from their people is solely about being liked and receiving affirmation. However, leadership isn't a solitary endeavour and genuine trust is cultivated through consistently delivering on promises and commitments. Teams can thrive even if individuals don't necessarily like each other, so long trust exists. It's about fostering an environment of respect for differing perspectives and embracing challenges within a framework of safety and trust.
