One of the most important moments in a charity auction is right at the very start! 🎤 As an auctioneer, my top priority is to get everyone’s attention before the bidding begins, especially in long rooms where guests can easily be distracted by conversations or the distance from the stage. 📢 Sometimes, you’ve got to get creative to make sure everyone’s focused. I’m not afraid to do whatever it takes to grab attention—even if it means standing on a chair in the middle of the room with a wireless mic! Why? Retrospective research indicates that as many as 1 out of 4 girls and 1 out of 6 boys will experience some form of sexual abuse before the age of 18.1 However, because child sexual abuse is by its very nature secretive, many of these cases are never reported. ❌Myth: A child is most likely to be sexually abused by a stranger. ✔ Fact: Children are most often sexually abused by someone they know and trust. Approximately three quarters of reported cases of child sexual abuse are committed by family members or other individuals who are considered part of the victim’s “circle of trust.”2 ❌Myth: Children who are sexually abused will never recover. ✔Fact: Many children are quite resilient, and with a combination of effective counseling and support from their parents or caregivers, children can and do recover from such experiences. The CSAE Annual Conference silent auction takes place during our first night welcome reception. As a charity auctioneer, my role goes far beyond just running the live auction 🕺🎤 Fundraising is a team effort, and I believe it's crucial for the auctioneer to get involved in every aspect of the event—from selling raffle tickets 🎟️ to hyping up the silent auction 🖋️. Why? Because every penny counts 💰, and it's our job to create an atmosphere of generosity that flows through every part of the evening. If I can help squeeze a few more bids on the silent auction or encourage someone to buy just one more raffle ticket, that extra effort can make all the difference in hitting the charity's fundraising goals. I’m also a firm believer that the fundraising doesn’t stop when the live auction ends! I keep going right up until the moment I leave the venue 🕒. Whether it's pushing that final donation or reminding people of the good cause on their way out the door, it’s all about maximising the impact of the event. I even managed to sell a TukTuk to the 360 Video guys who took this video, just before I was about to leave. Being a charity auctioneer isn’t just about selling items. It’s about driving a mission. Top Ten Biggest Mistakes Made at a Fundraising Auction Event 10. Poor item display and lack of PowerPoint slides or video to spotlight items during the auction. 9. Poor lighting 8. Using no or small print bid numbers 7. Not making adequate announcements during silent auction 6. Starting the live auction too late 5. Not enough or no ringmen (bid spotters) 4. Beginning the live auction after the sit-down dinner is over 3. Insufficient sound system 2. Not using a fund-a-need or doing a fund-a-need incorrectly 1. As a Charity Auctioneer why do I bring a tablet bigger than my head to fundraising events? 🤔 One of my top priorities is ensuring guests are excited and ready to bid! 🎯 That’s why I always bring my trusty tablet 📲 to every event. It’s a fantastic tool to show guests the auction items in advance. I make sure to arrive as soon as the guests do ⏰. Why? Because it’s crucial to meet and connect with them before the live auction kicks off! By using my tablet to walk them through the lots—complete with images and details—I can build anticipation and get them thinking about their favorite items long before they raise their paddles 🖐️. This personal touch goes a long way. Guests feel more engaged, and when the live auction begins, they’re already excited about the items they’ve seen up close. Whether it’s a dream holiday 🏖️ or a one-of-a-kind experience 🎁, getting them emotionally invested early is key to creating that bidding buzz. My approach is always to get in there, meet the guests, and use a tablet to show off the lots in advance.
