Important article about the growth of healthcare deserts across the country. Although many larger pharmacy chains are experiencing closures, independent pharmacies are especially struggling to stay open. "A lot of pharmacies around the states have closed. But when people heard about Rite Aid and Walgreens, they realized that pharmacy is in trouble. Well we’ve been in trouble," says Heather Ockinga, owner of Village Pharmacy and member of the Nebraska Rural Health Board. This is an issue now, but it's important to recognize that this has been an issue for years. I think the Medicare advantage space needs to be more creative with their supplemental benefits. What if they partnered with farmers markets to ship fresh produce to beneficiaries? Or how about partnering with local restaurants to have tailored meals exclusive for beneficiaries? Or how about partnering with existing fast food chains, such as McDonald’s, to have a special “Medicare advantage” menu. We need creativity in the healthcare system.
