Were you looking for a professional ice-breaker? My friend (who often saves the day for me academically) shared a great template! I am trying to learn better to express the "what-I-bring-to-the-table-with-my-skills" component of my conversations, it's always a good practice to help, share and learn together! Insights are welcomed :D
Attended the Tech Chicago Day 2024 with a little bit of Flair !!! This day the flagship event of Tech Chicago Week offered a lot in terms of Tech and its development. Personally, I loved the Tech Talent Zone, where I connected with some leading companies in Tech regarding their employment opportunities. Like many talent/career fairs, this too was filled many companies with their recruiters and representatives. Some people get overwhelmed by the sheer number of people present. I'm one of them. So I asked my friends Arup Chauhan & Swastik Patro for help. Here's a template of how I ended up making the most of the opportunity : 1. 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗦 your interest and enthusiasm in the domain where you want to work. 2. Ask about 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗝𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗦 which are being done by the company in that field. 3. Mention your own 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 in projects which require similar skills. 4. Get to know the 𝗛𝗜𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗗. The range of dates when openings are posted, so that you can actively look out for opportunities and be ready to apply. 5. Finally 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗡𝗘𝗖𝗧 ! So that in the future, you know whom to contact for more details regarding certain openings where you're a great fit. Kudos to the organizers for giving me such an amazing opportunity to connect !!! #TechChicagoDay #TechTalent #Networking #CareerOpportunities

I talk about Edupreneur.ing: Where Former Educator Founders can build a legendary educational business 🧙🏼♂️🔮 Friend to Ruckus Makers 🏴☠️✌️ 3x Best Selling Author 📚 TOP 0.5% Podcast Host🎙️🌍👀
Meet Loren Brody, an East Coast principal with 7+ years in the Ruckus Maker Mastermind™. He leads an arts-integrated public elementary school, focusing on creativity and community building. Loren faced a common challenge: attracting top talent in a competitive educational landscape. With fewer candidates interested in education, he needed to stand out to secure the best teachers. Initially, Loren's recruitment approach was "plain." He attended job fairs with typical setups and sent generic emails. His interview process lacked differentiation from other schools. Through our Do School Different™ framework, Loren learned to create a memorable experience for candidates. He made three key changes: 1. Rewrote email pitches, emphasizing the school's unique identity: "We're not your average public elementary school. We're an arts integrated learning team dedicated to grassroots community building." 2. Developed new interview questions aligned with school values, revealing candidates' cultural competence and reflective capacity. 3. Considered implementing a "School Leadership Scorecard" in interviews, turning them into professional development experiences. The results were immediate. Candidates responded enthusiastically, saying, "Wow, that's exactly the kind of school I'm looking for!" The quality of responses improved dramatically. Concerned about candidates faking their way through? The depth and uniqueness of this approach make it difficult to simply "put on a show," revealing genuine alignment and passion. Ready to transform your school's recruitment and attract top talent? Join The Ruckus Maker Club and learn to Do School Different™. Membership is open now for a limited time. Comment #RuckusMaker and I'll message you a link to join us.

Yesterday's jobFair in kood/Jõhvi brought us together with some potential employer companies to let us have a glimpse into the tech world and start networking. Companies represented as diverse fields as banking, customer relations, gaming, autonomous vehicles, embedded engineering, security and health care, and of course general IT systems development. Vlad Rannik in his intro talk encouraged us (in my interpretation) to 1) start moving, 2) keep going, and 3) not giving up :). Curiosity, building your pet projects and continuous learning are at least as important as mastering the fine art of interviews and networking. Panels gave us a glimpse into some aspects of life in tech world and steps leading into this life through personal experiences of panelists. Booths allowed us to talk to representatives of companies more interesting to us (and listen to others talking to them - probably all had more-or-less similar questions). And speed-meetings with representatives of different companies (3 minutes for each) were probably meant for us to gain some confidence in articulating our burning questions (and have (too) short answers) and for companies to get some impression of the pool of students and may-be notice someone more interesting for them also. I chose not to inquire so much about opening positions and my chances with them as what inspires these people about their companies and what they see as main challenges before their companies. Answers were fascinating and thought-provoking. While all were great and intriguing, my favorites were Codeborne, Milrem Robotics and SMIT (https://www.smit.ee/) - all very different. Codeborne with the sheer diversity of their projects and style of work, Milrem Robotics with their leading edge research and technology, and SMIT with their mission of protection. These were just first impressions.

There are so many creative ways to approach the same problem! The networking was amazing, but my biggest takeaway from the reverse career fair was seeing how everyone's unique background shaped their booth setup! I went for a simple approach to highlight myself (photo below). But seriously, I was blown away by the diversity of strategies – especially from some of my awesome computer science peers. Here are a few who inspired me, should I find myself in this situation again: Chelsie Cake (and Allison Wragg too!): Used both her marketing and designing background to approach her booth, turning her surname into her personal brand image. Past client work, be it posters or shirts – the proof is in the pudding, and she really showed that while keeping it personal! Maïka Hearson: With a background in film and video production, she too showcased the proof itself with her work and professional gear front and centre. Her socials' QR codes were on a simple sign holder, and a contrasted table runner made it simple but still pop! Jason (let’s connect if you see this, I can’t seem to find you!): A fellow computer science student, he tag-teamed the booth with his partner. They had a slide show running on one monitor for when a crowd gathered, while showing off intricate nature-inspired code running on the other display! Jager Cooper: Another fellow computer science student and a superhero in my book! What’s cooler than showing off your work as CTO in your very own start-up company in the making? Or a demo of a math problem generator he made just for his kids (how cool is that!)? Like me, he kept it simple, and the focus was on him to deliver. Huge thanks to the people at Embark for this opportunity, #CareerTech is a wrap! Everyone I photographed, I hope you liked your low-key portraits! My only regret is not getting booth photos for everyone mentioned – Definitely drop that in the comments if you have any to share! 😁
