The “Dead-Beat” seconds is probably one of the least known complication or horological characteristic out there. Contrary to what most might believe, in this case, the “ticking” seconds hand is not the result of a quartz movement. In fact, a ticking seconds hand was a peculiarity introduced already in very expensive pocket watches from well over two centuries ago. Who was first? It is unclear since, like with the chronograph, every time one is claimed to be the creator, another is discovered that made it way before... The oldest I have seen was a Glashütte grand complication pocket watch over 100 years old. So complex that only the high-end restoration specialists at AP could restore it to its former glory. Apart from being a repeater, perpetual calendar, retrograde, you name it... it also had a ticking dead-beat seconds.
