Each vacation, I feel both joy and sadness. Living between two cultures comes with its own challenges especially during vacation times. When you live between two different cultures, each side have different ways of doing vacations. The Albanian culture is more focused on spending time with extended family, the Norwegian culture is more on adventure and on exploring new places. Family expectations can be hard to balance, either country. During the 18 years of living between Oslo and Tirana,I have experienced and collected some practical wisdom on how to manage family expectations. So that you and I prioritise our personal wellbeing as well as we give to others. Here is what helps me: 1. Radical acceptance that some cultural systems, expectations are hard to change. It may mean that some persons will not change or are not capable of changing their expectations to fit yours. 2. Let that go and accept the feelings of grief and sadness. It may mean that some relationships are not going to grow as you expected. 3. Prioritise my wellbeing: Ask myself: What is that I want to do today? Take each day at time . Both when it comes to relationships and how you want to spend the day, with yourself and others. 4. Have plans to meet people that lift me up and respond well to my energy. 5. Reflect on who I am becoming. It is ok to accept that you have evolved or changed and some of the old things does not align to you anymore. 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 🧘♀️📈 Day 3 of my return from a two-week vacation in the beautiful land of Sicily, and wow, what a refreshing experience it was! 🌞🍷🏞️ You never know how much you need the time away until you are away. The serene landscapes, the rich history, and the delectable cuisine all contributed to a truly rejuvenating break. As I transition back to the fast-paced environment of corporate America, I’m reminded of some invaluable lessons that Sicily imparted to me: 🤗 Embrace the Slow Moments: Life in Sicily is beautifully unhurried, everythign is "Piano piano," loosly translated, it means take your time, or a little at a time. Taking time to savor moments, whether it's a meal or a conversation, is something I want to incorporate more into my daily routine. ⚖️ Prioritize Balance: The balance between work and relaxation in Sicily is inspiring. Ensuring I take regular breaks and set boundaries will help maintain this balance. 🌿 Connect with Nature: The breathtaking landscapes of Sicily reminded me of the importance of nature. Working in the office and our summer heat can make this challenging, but I plan to look for opportunities to connect with nature. It could be watering my plants in the morning, or walking my dogs. 🥰 Appreciate the Simple Things: From the joy of making fresh ricotta cheese to the tranquility of a vineyard, appreciating simplicity brings immense happiness. I’ll strive to find joy in everyday tasks and interactions. Let's have some fun reading emails. 🤪 To keep these lessons alive, I’ll be: - Setting Daily Intentions: Each morning, I’ll set a small intention to remind myself of these lessons, whether it’s taking a mindful lunch break or enjoying a moment of stillness. - Creating a Relaxation Space: Incorporating elements of Sicily into my home office, like photos or souvenirs, will serve as a visual reminder of that serenity. - Scheduling Downtime: Ensuring I have dedicated time for relaxation and activities that bring me joy, much like the leisurely evenings spent in Sicily. I’m excited to bring this renewed perspective into my work and daily life. This is the view from behind my house. And every time I look at Barcelona from here, something happens. A slight perspective shift. I see my home. I see my kids' school. I see other places we like to go. But differently. When I see those places up close, I'm in day-to-day mode. Trying to get somewhere or accomplish something. So, when I'm home, I'm focused on things I do at home: working, doing dishes, being with the family. And when I'm en route from home to school, I'm focused on the walk with my son, and getting him to class on time. But when I walk up the hill and look from above, I see something different. I see weekly routines. I see annual festivities. I see 17 years of memories. ... Most of the time we're focused on our immediate surroundings—our families, jobs, homes, and to-do lists—with one eye on our goals just up ahead. But we rarely take time to step back and look from above. To notice the habits and routines we've built for ourselves. To see where we’ve come from, and check the path we're on. Goals and routines keep us moving forward in useful ways. But every once in a while, I find it useful to take a look at life from above. Maybe it's a quick moment of gratitude. Maybe it triggers a flash realization that your life needs to change. Or maybe I should get off the hill, stop talking nonsense, and get back to work. Here’s how I stay connected with both worlds during this magical time: 🌟𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘆: I create a list of key tasks that need my attention before diving into the festivities. This way, I ensure work moves smoothly while I enjoy the celebrations without worry. 🌟𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬: I break my work into manageable chunks. With focused sessions, I accomplish more in less time, allowing me to indulge guilt-free in the festive fun! 🎊 🌟 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬: Festivals are about being present in the 𝙢𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 – whether it’s during work or while enjoying time with family and friends.
