One of the cool things about #adaptivereuse is the juxtaposition, sometimes planned, sometimes not, of older existing elements and new uses. Intriguing visual interest can be the result of those juxtapositions, as in these containers that become a focal point in this gathering space, part of the conversion of a historic brewery into a hotel. Adaptive reuse of existing buildings is a critical tool for the sustainability and resilience of our cities. It allows our cities to be viewed creatively and provides valuable lessons regarding what we should value in our built environment. We need to support the preservation and extension of the lives of our historic resources.

International Biodiversity Day: den Bell, an inspiring biodiverse make-over Nature is our best ally in tackling the loss of biodiversity. On today’s International Biodiversity day, we would like to highlight our project ‘den Bell’ as an inspiring project for more biodiversity in our urban environments of tomorrow. The project supports the life and growth of area-specific plant and animal species with more space for greenery, nature and, of course, people. The city of Antwerp organised an ambitious design competition in 2021 to make the site of the city building ‘den Bell’ in Antwerp greener. Both the courtyard on top of the underground car park and the roofs are part of the design and are now under construction. The design transforms the triangular courtyard into a green urban oasis. As much as 30% of greenery will be added and hard surface will be depaved. It creates space for nature and biodiversity and increases the living quality. In addition, trees, shrubs and a high pergola, overgrown with climbing plants, provide shade. Despite the strong greening of the square, the main walking lines are respected in the design. The minimal paving allows a smooth exchange between the buildings. Thanks to planting beds, stepping stones also provide ‘wandering paths’ that allow real access to the greenery. client: Stad Antwerpen + AG Vespa
