Australia taking steps towards criminalizing sexually explicit deepfakes. 🔍 Given the hefty potential sentence, it's important to be able to clearly identify content as a deepfake, to that end, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus acknowledged the potential difficulties in identifying and prosecuting those who share deepfakes online because of the anonymous nature of social media accounts. He also affirmed that technological means of tracing could overcome difficulties in detection and prosecution. ❗ One could see why it's important not to only develop tools that give you that one nice number saying that it's a deepfake, but also clearly communicate WHY it may be a deepfake through identifiable artifacts. 🤔 Beyond that, the legislation specifically targets sexually explicit material that is shared without consent and is digitally created or altered using artificial intelligence or other technology. The key factors for discernment include: • 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭: The primary factor is whether the individuals depicted in the material have given their consent for creation and distribution. • 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧t: The purpose behind the creation of the content is considered. If it’s intended to degrade, humiliate, or harm, it’s likely to be classified as malicious. • 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲: Technological means of tracing and forensic analysis are employed to detect the origins of deepfakes and differentiate them from legitimate entertainment content. • 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭: The context in which the material is shared is also taken into account, as entertainment content is generally produced and shared within legal and ethical boundaries. #Deepfake #Cybersecurity #Legislation #DigitalConsent #EthicalAI #ExplainableAI #DigitalForensics

Australia is set to introduce tough new laws against the non-consensual sharing of deepfake pornography, with serious criminal penalties including up to six years in jail. 🔒 The move comes in response to the rise in pornographic deepfakes generated by artificial intelligence, which Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus describes as a "damaging and deeply distressing form of abuse." 👩⚖️ The legislation targets those who share sexually explicit material without consent using technology like AI, with an aggravated offence carrying a seven-year imprisonment penalty for creators of such content. 🛑 This initiative is part of the federal government’s commitment to address Australia’s gendered violence crisis and is expected to receive broad support from the entire parliament. ❓Given the ban and a hefty penalty for creators, it is very important to have reliable and usable tools to discern generated/manipulated content from the pristine one. #Deepfake #Cybersecurity #EthicalAI #Legislation #GenderedViolence #DigitalConsent https://lnkd.in/eKaMiaTv
