Last week, Sojourners' Director of Campaigns & Mobilizing, Sandra Ovalle, joined Galen Carey of the National Association of Evangelicals and the board of World Relief, and Kate Sugarman, a family doctor who serves asylum seekers through her practice, as part of a panel on immigration for Pepperdine University's COMMUNITAS program. COMMUNITAS supports early career pastors in developing as leaders who can help their congregations be agents of positive change for the community. We're so thankful to have been part of this conversation with the COMMUNITAS cohort about welcoming and walking with our immigrant neighbors! Thank you to Jennifer Lee Koh, professor and co-director of the Nootbaar Institute on Law, Religion & Ethics at Pepperdine Caruso Law for this invitation and for fostering such important dialogue! #immigration #socialjustice #ministry #asylumseekers

"How can societies identify spaces of inclusion, civic engagement, and representation for marginalized communities, including immigrants? Perhaps a larger challenge is how societies and communities can create spaces of inclusion, engagement, and representation. I suggest that such action cannot begin until there is first a philosophical commitment to compassion." To mark the #zerodiscrimminationday we wanted to bring to your attention this op-ed, written by Michelle Rumbaut, who attended the Salzburg Global American Studies program "Beyond the Nation-State? Borders, Boundaries, and the Future of Democratic Pluralism" Follow the link to the full article 👇 https://ow.ly/S4gQ50QINC1 #SGSAmericanStudies #InclusiveSpaces #GlobalCitizenship #SocialJustice #DiversityandInclusion #CommunityEngagement

I am deeply disturbed by Donald Trump's recent comments during his campaign stop in Iowa on January 5. Referring to migrants as 'illegal aliens' is not just a blatant display of insensitivity, but also rhetoric that deeply disrespects and dehumanizes millions of people who are simply seeking a better life. This rhetoric has been picked up by millions and spreads like fire in a dry forest, leading to hatred, non-acceptance, and violence. This kind of rhetoric is not only factually misleading but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes. Such language is not just a matter of semantics; it shapes public perception and policy towards vulnerable communities. As a nation built by immigrants, it's our responsibility to challenge such narratives, especially if they have been perpetuated by influential figures. As someone who believes in the values of respect, empathy, and the fundamental rights of every individual, I find it utterly unacceptable that a leader, who should be setting an example of unity and understanding, is instead choosing to perpetuate division and stigma. This type of language not only fosters an environment of hostility and prejudice against immigrant communities but also undermines the contributions they have made to the fabric of our countries. #stoptheinvasionoftrumpnarrative #Immigrants #diversity #inclusion #belonging #futureofwork

The federal government’s Multicultural Framework Review presents us with the opportunity to look back on the trials and tribulations of Australian multiculturalism, both as response to the racist history of the nation and as a policy framework aimed at sowing an alternative social cohesion. At the same time as this Review, the federal government has been pushing through the Migration Amendment Bill 2024; further criminalising seeking asylum, opening the door to indefinite detention, facilitating the separation of families, and empowering the Minister to ban all people from designated “concern” countries. And of course, multiculturalism and the impacts of racism have been brought into much sharper focus by the after effects of The Voice referendum. Borderlands has invited a diversity of guests to help us engage in this increasingly important conversation about the meaning of multiculturalism in our current national and global context. The conversation will be facilitated in a Q & A framework, with the panel consisting of our invited guests (below). Details & (free) Ticket link here: https://lnkd.in/gcdbDmUN
