Do you feel like spa and wellness is the most neglected department in your hotel? As a wellness director, you might be frustrated: → always battling with your Director of Finance for a budget to purchase the bare minimum (eg. deodorant, mouthwash in changing rooms, etc.) to meet brand standards. → constantly running promotion after promotion to boost spa sales. → begging your therapists to stay longer or come in on their day off because increase in headcount has been rejected. I hear you. It’s exhausting and demoralising. Constantly having to fight to get your GM, Director of Finance and Director of Sales & Marketing. So they take wellness seriously. We kicked off day 3 with the smart, delightful Valentina Clergue. I had the pleasure of speaking alongside Valentina in ITB Berlin earlier this year and her eye-opening research was music to my ears. A brilliant mind with research-based evidence on the types of wellbeing and their impact on our top and bottom lines. There are two types of wellbeing: 👉 Hedonic (pleasure-based) 👉 Eudaimonic (meaning-based) Here my key takeaways from Valentina's session: 1️⃣ Wellbeing is a core element → not an add-on; it's fundamental to the hospitality experience → integrating both hedonic and eudaimonic wellbeing allows us to create deeply memorable and transformative experiences → impacting their lives long after they leave our property 2️⃣ Authenticity is key → guests can easily distinguish between genuine and superficial wellbeing efforts → you must genuinely thread wellbeing into the DNA of your brand → so your offerings resonate authentically and sustainably with your guests 3️⃣ Wellbeing makes business sense → when you enhance both physical and emotional comfort through hedonic wellbeing → and stimulate mental and spiritual growth through eudaimonic wellbeing → you boost guest satisfaction and loyalty, driving revenue and brand loyalty And most importantly, it's essential to look at your guest experience from THEIR perspective. Here’s a truth in the hospitality industry: the happier your staff, the happier your guests 💯 Aside from the obvious customer service perks (everyone wants service with a smile, right?), the happier your people are, the more engaged they’ll be with their work. We’ve got some quick tips to boost engagement amongst your hotel staff: ✅ Prioritise health: stress and bad working environments can contribute to poor mental and physical health. Health initiatives - like a mental health first aider, healthy meals, or ergonomic chairs - will help your employees feel ready to do their best.  ✅ Encourage good working relationships: social wellbeing at work is a powerful factor in engagement. Give your staff regular opportunities to socialise and collaborate with teammates. ✅ Make career paths clear: show your people what a path to promotion looks like, and offer training and development opportunities to all. ✅ Protect work-life balance: this can be difficult in hospitality, but make sure no employee is overworking. Implementing tech that helps them manage workloads and communicate effectively (we know a tool that does the job 😉) can make the world of difference here. I was very pleased to learn that Hilton Hilton Hotels & Resorts embodies the principles of a true Spiritual Corporation. This deserves a separate post. The Mind-Body-Spirit connection is at the core of their staff #Wellbeing strategy. Recognition, empathy, and purpose are central to a healthy spirit. Mental wellness, mindful leadership, and flexibility are essential to enabling a healthy lifestyle. They’re making a strong effort—even though two days off, flexible hours, and WFH are normally unthinkable in the hospitality industry. Holistic wellbeing isn’t just about healthy food choices and exercise; above all, it requires #Stress management. The Thrive Global app is available to all Hilton employees. It’s frustrating that so few from the finance industry and only a handful of large corporations saw Marie-Louise Ek’s excellent presentation at the HRSE Summit last week. This must change—we need to learn from the champions. Why do many hoteliers struggle with their wellness offering? It's a mindset problem. They fall victim of one or more of the three common fallacies around wellness in hospitality: 📌 False Perceptions → Leads hoteliers to believe that wellness is not lucrative → so they don't fully explore the option. 📌 False Economies → Leads hoteliers to stretch their resources too thinly → mistakenly thinking they're saving money 📌 False Profits → Leads hoteliers to think they're making more profits → in reality, the gain in short-term profits comes at the cost long-term growth These common fallacies have led traditional hoteliers down unhelpful paths: → underinvesting in their wellness offering → treating wellness as an amenity → using their wellness offering a compensation tool However, the forward-thinking and innovative hoteliers view the same wellness offering in a different light.
