It was a great pleasure to participate in the Akamai Technologies Commerce Board and specifically the #MACH / #ComposableCommerce panel discussion. That panel discussion and the whole day of exchange revealed that now Composable Enterprise, Composable Commerce, MACH are really picking up and are a hot topic everywhere, as enterprises strive to transform their platforms into a more modular, scalable, agile, innovative and less vendor locked-in setup. It became obvious that MACH / Composable is the direction of all these initiatives, but the exact target architecture and a longer-term transformation strategy towards this, in controllable & affordable steps, is the challenge. Mostly a "big bang" relaunch or a greenfield-design is not an option, a incremental master plan is needed. And in many talks of the last months I see that there is a lot of unclarity about the exact key attributes of a composable architecture and with that the exact advantages to aim for. Many vendors use composable and/or MACH as buzz words on their product marketing slides, but are not a real match with the architecture principle. Some solutions are even what I would call "disguised monoliths" - products that have a monolithic past and got a few APIs added and now try to mimic the pattern. But it's not at all the same as a "real" MACH product. If it hasn't been built with a clear & sufficiently narrow capability focus, service design and "API first" from the start it will never get there.
