“In the U.S., there are more than 500 Agrivoltaics sites, producing a total of 9 GW of solar energy. These numbers are likely to grow as interest in Agrivoltaics has been greatly expanding, as indicated by the increase in support and funding for this sector," said Bertrand Vandewiele, GM of SolarEdge Technologies in North America. https://lnkd.in/gcC_yr4F

New study favors rooftop solar over large farms due to faster payback, lower costs, and minimal environmental impact. Solar panels pay for themselves in a year, lasting 25 years. Life cycle analysis reveals rooftop systems require 21-54% less input energy, emit 18-59% less CO2, and use 1-12% less water. Energy payback time for rooftops is 51-57% lower than ground-mounted systems. The advantage lies in utilizing existing infrastructure, reducing material use, and minimizing transmission losses. While promoting rooftop solar is beneficial, a mixed approach incorporating agrivoltaics, combining solar with agriculture, is necessary for broader energy needs. https://lnkd.in/ds8pNYRS

Addressing land rights is a pivotal challenge for solar developers in Southeast Asia due to the predominant use of available land for agricultural purposes and the region grapples with a scarcity of suitable sites for solar farms. Rystad Energy notes that FPVs have emerged as a viable option, leveraging bodies of water adjacent to agricultural areas. “Additionally, with land rights a major deterrent facing solar developers in Southeast Asia, as much of the land is used for agriculture, FPVs provide a solution for the coexistence of solar farms and agriculture,” said Jun Yee Chew, Head of Asia renewables and power research at Rystad Energy. #floatingsolar #renewables #marineenergy #renewableenergy #offshoreenergy

As noted in this article, while conflicts between renewable energy development and rural communities may be growing, it need not be inevitable. The ability for large-scale solar projects to be coupled with agriculture presents opportunities for collaboration rather than conflict. It stands to reason that this opportunity should be explored to a greater degree. The Clean Energy Council’s 2023 agrivoltaics’ report argues that it presents a sustainable model preserves agricultural productivity, demonstrating a promising future for co-development in utility-scale solar projects and farming practices. It can capitalise on the synergies between solar energy generation and agricultural production. https://lnkd.in/gZGJxbt6 #renewableenergy #renewables #renewablepower #renewablenergy #solarenergy #solar #solarpower #solarindustry #solarprojects #agrisolar #agrivoltaics

We've teamed up with some of Europe's best to research and transform Agri-PV adoption 🌱 ☀️ As land for projects becomes increasingly scarce, it is important to understand the synergies and land use patterns in solar development in order to weigh the trade-offs associated with land conversion. In line with REPowerEU's plan to increase PV capacity to 1000 GW by 2030, Agri-PV is poised to play a critical role in this expansion. Recognizing the need for comprehensive research on agricultural crop yield, PV production, and water consumption, we at Glint Solar are happy to announce our collaboration with kiloWattsol, Danish Renewables and Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE. This partnership focuses on integrating PV technology with agriculture to accelerate the adoption of Agri-PV. We couldn't be more excited and grateful to our incredible research partners! The project directly addresses the pressing global challenges of a projected 50% increase in agricultural production and a 15% increase in water demand by 2050—both vital for sustaining the expected population of 9 billion. In addition to optimizing energy output and reducing water consumption, the project aligns with the European Union's Renewable Energy Directive, which calls for 45% of energy to come from renewable sources by 2030. Our CEO Harald Olderheim commented, "Agri-PV represents a rapidly expanding sector within the solar market. We're excited to collaborate with industry-leading partners to provide solar developers with the latest insights and tools for efficient project deployment." For our part, we'll be developing a specialized software tool tailored for utility-scale developers that will provide deeper insight and support for the deployment of Agri-PV across Europe. We'll keep you updated on our progress! 🌱 Agri-PV is about creating a sustainable synergy between food production and solar energy. 🔗 Want to know more?
