🌍Blog Live “Post-2030 Vision: Prioritizing Gender Indicators for a Just and Inclusive Energy Transition” ENERGIA - International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy, in collaboration with UN Women and co-convenors of the Gender and Energy Compact members (GWNET: Global Women's Network for the Energy Transition, UNIDO, Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL)), has published an opinion piece on the need to prioritize gender indicators in the global energy transition. With only six years remaining until the 2030 deadline for the #SDGs, progress has been too slow, especially on gender equality. At present, #SDG7 on sustainable energy is one of only six SDGs that lack a specific gender indicator, even though the two are closely interlinked. We can correct this gap in the post-2030 energy framework. This calls for: ✅ Making women more visible in sustainable energy. ✅ Expanding the gender lens on energy data collection. How we 'Leave No One Behind' in energy access is a hot topic, but we simply can't achieve these goals if women aren't specifically targeted and their energy needs appropriately met.  GOGLA with support from the IKEA Foundation has been working to develop new gender-inclusion guidance and KPIs for productive use energy companies. Despite progress on energy access, energy efficiency and renewable energy, the current pace is not adequate to achieve any of the 2030 targets for SDG7 on Sustainable Energy. One of the reasons for this failure to reach targets is the gender gap. This is frustrating because it is well-recognized that gender equality is key to success in meeting the energy SDG targets. If the world wants to achieve and advance the SDG agenda, then linking SDG5 and SDG7 must be part of a just and inclusive transition.   ENERGIA puts forward five key elements of a gender-just transition linking SDG 7 on sustainable energy, and SDG 5 on gender equality:   ·      Ending energy poverty by targeting women more intentionally ·      Gender-smart investment and financing for women’s businesses ·      Equal opportunities for women’s career advancement ·      An enabling energy policy and market environment ·      An accountability framework   👉 Read about each of these elements in our recent blog:  https://lnkd.in/eiSF2NBz

But as an emerging industry, renewable energy provides a valuable opportunity to promote gender equality. #WeekendRead : Exciting New Report on #Energy & #Gender!  🚀 The Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Gender & Youth Team, supported by sector-wide collaboration, released a groundbreaking report: “Improving Energy Data to Enhance Gender Equality.”  💡 Key Highlights:  🔹 Women’s disproportionate lack of energy access: 675 million people still lack access to electricity . 🔹 The gender data gap in the energy sector: SDG 7 is one of only six SDGs with zero gender indicators . 🔹 Challenges in collecting energy data: limited capacity, time, resources; methodological inconsistencies; and gaps in assessing gender impact. A just transition must work for everyone—yet gender equity in climate finance, energy access, and decision-making is still gridlocked at #COP29. Women, especially those in vulnerable sectors, are often excluded from climate policies and economic transitions - despite the fact that 80% of people displaced by climate change are women, according to the UN. Women bring invaluable knowledge, direct experience and hold transformative potential. As such, “climate action that leaves out women is a half measure. It limits our ability to create resilient economies and healthier societies, leaving us less equipped to face the climate crisis. A gender-responsive just transition is not just a matter of fairness; it’s the key to effective, transformative climate solutions. By championing women’s voices and advancing equity at every level, we can ensure a future that works for everyone. Let’s keep building momentum towards a #FairTransitionForAll. Incorporating a gender perspective into energy transitions is crucial for achieving a more inclusive and effective transition to a green economy. The Enhanced Lima Work Programme and its Gender Action Plan which is up for review at #COP29, emphasize the importance of empowering women in the climate and energy sectors. Ensuring gender equity in green jobs, decision-making, and access to resources can contribute to the development of more sustainable and resilient energy systems. Meanwhile, as #COP29 enters its second week, several critical gender-related challenges remain unresolved: ♀️ Limited women's participation in key decision-making processes. 🗣️ Gender equality remains gridlocked in negotiations, preventing meaningful progress. 💰 Uncertainty around gender-responsive climate finance, which is vital for equitable transitions. 👥 Overlooking the care economy in Just Transition plans, leaving key dimensions of social equity unaddressed. Addressing these gaps is pivotal to achieving a #FairTransitionForAll.

📢 Report Release: Global Commission on People-Centred Clean Energy Transitions: Designing for Fairness The International Energy Agency (IEA) Global Commission on People-Centred Clean Energy Transitions has released a report on "Designing for Fairness", which examines how clean energy policies can be formulated to promote greater affordability, equitable distribution of benefits and costs, and enhanced equity within energy systems. At the forefront of this initiative is The Gender and Energy Compact, co-convened by ENERGIA - International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy, which submitted crucial insights on advancing gender equality across these themes. The newly released document on the IEA website features the Compact's proactive work, which has acted as a catalyst in reinforcing efforts toward #GenderEquality and #Women’sEmpowerment in the energy sector.
