It's a solvable problem, and I'm proud to be part of the team building the scalable solution with such an incredible institution as a partner. I am thrilled to share a systematic review led by our talented University of the West of Scotland PhD student Siobhan Moran, marking her first first-author paper of the PhD. This research highlights the significant effects of dietary nitrate on the oral microbiome and its broader implications for oral and systemic health. Key Findings: Enhanced Oral Health: Consumption of dietary nitrate was found to increase the abundance of oral health-associated genera, particularly Rothia and Neisseria. Reduction in Disease-Associated Genera: Notably, we observed a decrease in Prevotella, commonly associated with periodontal disease and halitosis, following nitrate consumption. Improved Oral Environment: Our study shows that nitrate intake not only increases oral pH but also reduces levels of Streptococcus and Veillonella, marking a positive shift from a caries perspective. Systemic Health Benefits: The oral health benefits observed were linked to systemic improvements, particularly in markers of cardiovascular disease risk, suggesting nitrate could play a crucial role in overall health maintenance. Prebiotic Potential of Nitrate: The research posits that nitrate could be considered a prebiotic for oral health, highlighting its potential in dietary strategies aimed at improving health. This research underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the potential for dietary components to support health beyond traditional nutritional perspectives.
