I think this post is brilliant because it addresses some of the common, understandable misconceptions of the general public with regards to chemotherapy and pets:
💊 In veterinary medicine, we use lower doses of chemotherapy and less intense protocols than in humans (even when you account for the difference in weight of the patients, or more accurately within veterinary oncology, their surface area), and this means the side effects that dogs and cats suffer from in veterinary are often milder and usually different. For example, it is very rare for a dog or cat to suffer hair loss from chemotherapy.
🏥 We consider our patients welfare and comfort with regards to receiving chemotherapy to be paramount. Chemotherapy involves multiple visits to the vets, often with associated travel and stress for pets. We believe that patients that require heavy sedation at the vets or that suffer extreme anxiety associated with the vets or travel may not be appropriate chemotherapy candidates.
💛 Chemotherapy is an efficacious treatment modality for palliation of cancers in dogs and cats and it can prolong the life of an animal while reducing pain and discomfort.
I recently completed my last rotation (!!!) in the oncology department at Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge which opened my eyes to the utility of chemotherapy and the ways it can be used to help our pets. ❤️
