In a significant step towards its sustainability goals, California recently approved plans to add over 56GW of new solar, wind, and storage by 2035. This sweeping buildout aims to reduce electric sector emissions by nearly 60%. To reach the target, coordinated planning across agencies is essential, from resource procurement to transmission infrastructure. A key initiative we are excited about is the Community Solar program currently in legislation. Community solar has been proven across the country to make significant strides towards RPS goals. In anticipation of this emerging market, onCORE has been originating sites for clients’ to develop community solar projects. In 2023, onCORE Origination originated 54 new community solar projects in California alone for its clients through targeted outreach and strategic relationships. New Mexico is committed to renewable energy, aiming for 100% carbon-free electricity by 2045. The $7 billion Solar for All Program supports disadvantaged communities, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and cutting electric bills for over 900,000 households. Inclusive Prosperity Capital's "Powering America Together" integrates with the US Department of Energy’s National Community Solar Partnership, promoting community solar projects, quality jobs, and equitable workforce development. Initiatives like Oweesta Corporation's program ensure solar access across Tribal lands. At KiloNewton LLC, we're proud to be part of this green revolution. We optimize the layout of solar projects to maximize production while minimizing costs. Our efforts help developers and EPCs (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) providers identify the most cost-effective sites and optimize site usage. Our approach can reduce costs by up to 5%, improve energy generation by up to 5%, and lower electricity costs by as much as 10%. Empowering Communities: Solar Co-ops and the Net-Zero 2050 Goal Solar co-operatives are making solar energy accessible to everyone, from apartment dwellers to low-income households. In Regina, the Wascana Solar Co-op installed 115 solar panels on the Conexus Credit Union’s North Albert branch, allowing members like William Ingenthron to benefit from renewable energy despite living in an apartment. These co-operatives democratize energy by enabling community members to invest in local solar projects, generating returns and offsetting emissions. According to a 2022 census by the University of Victoria and the University of Saskatchewan, dozens of solar co-ops across Canada are contributing to the local clean energy economy. Solar co-ops work by raising funds through community investment, installing solar panels on larger sites, and sharing the revenue generated with their members. This model supports Canada’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 while driving local investment and participation in renewable energy projects. Solar co-ops are not only a low-cost way to achieve climate objectives but also foster innovation and resilience in the energy system.
