The September issue of Hydro Leader is here! Hydropower is sometimes thought of as an energy source of the past: a “forgotten giant,” as one of this month’s interviewees puts it. But as the penetration of wind and solar generation increases, more energy storage and more firm and dispatchable carbon-free energy will be needed, things that hydropower is well suited to provide. This month’s stories cover large pumped storage hydro projects as well as nimble modular and ocean-based power systems—all of which will help make up the future of hydro. For this month’s cover story, we sit down with National Hydropower Association Board Chair Mike Haynes, who is also the interim general manager of Seattle City Light, to talk about his work at the association and about its upcoming Clean Currents conference, which will take place October 10–13 in Cincinnati. https://bit.ly/45yAN5k #CleanCurrents2023 #HydroPowerConference #RenewableEnergyLeaders #GreenEnergySummit #CleanEnergyInnovation #HydroLeaderSeptember #SustainablePower #CleanCurrentsPreview #HydropowerInFocus #SeptemberCoverStory

📈 Governmental and intergovernmental institutions have pushed for higher renewable integration and called for investments in flexibility technology, a faster response to changes in power demand and generation, and the reimagined electricity systems that come with it. But for those on the ground, the question remains: will the chase for #flexibility be worth it? Join the conversation on Friday 22 September, register at: https://lnkd.in/dF9fedw8 Check the time in your time zone: https://lnkd.in/dwFH439d Against the backdrop of XFLEX HYDRO, the research and innovation consortium tackling hydropower flexibility in Europe, this new instalment of Next Generation Hydro will lay out the questions and answers that researcher and operators have been grappling with. How far can hydropower go to provide grid stability services and flexibility to the system? What should operators consider when planning for the future? This event will present findings from recent research as well as operators’ insights into investment decisions. With: Berto Campinho Martins, Director Electricity Markets (EDP), Quentin Boucher. Senior Electricity Market Specialist (SuperGrid Institute), Mo Cloonan, Principal Project Manager Net Zero Markets (EPRI Europe) and Matteo Bianciotto (IHA) Register today and join the conversation to reimagine power systems.

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released a $9.5 million funding opportunity to increase #hydropower's flexibility, allowing to better balance the variability of wind and solar on the increasingly #renewable grid. The opportunity will fund projects in three topic areas: - Up to $4 million for projects that demonstrate hydropower hybrid configurations, such as a hydropower facility paired with another type of generation or with an energy storage resource. - Up to $4 million for projects that advance technology innovations to improve the flexible capabilities of the U.S. hydropower fleet. - Up to $1.5 million for projects that quantify the flexible capabilities of hydropower and advance operational strategies to increase such flexibility to better serve an evolving electric grid Between four and seven awards are anticipated, and applicants must submit a concept paper by January 18, 2024. Excellent. The fact that it can perform the longest duration storage and it does not need replacing for over 100 years should be promoted more. For smaller sites without mountains watch RheEnergise pumping liquid heavier than concrete up mere hills, out of sight. Pumped hydro reinvented and other options are covered in reports at www.zharresearch.com.
#Pumped #hydro #storage #plays #a #key #role #in #energy #transition to ensure the security and stability of power systems with a higher share of renewable generation.: With pumped hydro energy storage gaining value over the coming years as a means to integrate renewables into electricity production and the supply chain, a method is needed to optimize scheduling and management of this asset. Researchers in Spain said ''The use of pumped hydro-energy storage is essential in current electricity grids with a high share of renewable energy because it allows for the optimization of the use of generated energy and the possible reduction of excess energy discharges. In addition, it can replace combined heat and power plants, which are dependent on gas imports and produce high CO2 emissions, as a backup system to guarantee electricity supply in combination with renewable energy.” Thus, they modeled and applied an optimal hourly management model of grid-connected photovoltaic and wind power plants integrated with reversible pump-turbine units to maximize the monthly operating profits of the energy system and meet electricity demand.
