Researchers in Germany developed a new solar cell design that uses organic dyes to capture a wider range of sunlight. The URPB system achieved 38% energy conversion efficiency in lab tests, compared to 1% for conventional organic dyes. This technology has the potential to revolutionize solar energy production by creating thinner, lighter, and more efficient solar panels. Now, one German team believes it has found a new light-harvesting system that could massively increase solar energy production. There is also optimism around the use of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) thanks to their high performance and low production costs. PSCs have shown great progress in recent years, with significant efficiency improvements, from around 3 percent in 2009 to more than 25 percent today. This has encouraged the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE), and other public and private institutions around the world to invest heavily in the improvement of PSC technology.

The plummeting prices and soaring efficiencies of photovoltaic panels are truly exciting. Solar energy has gone from a niche technology to a rapidly scalable solution for clean electricity. There are still challenges, of course. Further research is needed to improve solar cell materials, enhance energy storage capabilities, and fully integrate solar into the grid infrastructure. This is where academic collaboration can make a real difference. By bringing together engineers, scientists, economists, and policy experts, universities are accelerating solar innovation. Cross-disciplinary solar centers are driving progress through knowledge sharing and multidisciplinary research. The future is bright for solar. With continued technology improvements and policy support, solar PV can become a major pillar of the global energy system. Collaboration between industry, government and academia will be key to fully harness the power of the sun. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) concluded a workshop on September 13, 2023, focusing on two key aspects: (a) Quality Control of Solar Thermal Technologies and (b) Necessary interventions to scale up these technologies in India. This workshop aims to engage stakeholders in vital discussions, and several key points were highlighted: (i)The need for improving enabling infrastructure, including testing labs for Technologies. (ii) The importance of establishing conducive bidding guidelines to promote technology adoption. (iii) Providing technical support to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to facilitate installation and implementation. (iv)Raising awareness about the Return on Investment (RoI) of CSTs. (v) Recognizing that incentives, grants, and subsidies imply viability and build trust among the public. (vi) Encouraging the commercial application of CSTs. (vii)Acknowledging the pull effect of incentives in changing consumer behaviour. (viii)Emphasizing the importance of digital and social media marketing to increase CST adoption.

How can one make the most of the sun? 🌞🧐 Finland, who especially this time a year sees very little of it (!), has become a bit of a pioneer in solar energy innovations; Valoe Oyj , a seasoned expert in photovoltaic (PV) technology, is developing new efficient methods to generate renewable solar electricity. Virte Solar Oy was one of the first companies in the world to introduce solar roofing. A combination of a metal roofing sheet and copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin-film cells, the innovative product is over 90 per cent lighter than its predecessors. Solar Water Solutions revolutionizes access to safe affordable drinking water in rural areas. Solarigo Systems, subsidiary of Lumme Energia, designs and constructs solar power plants, particularly for commercial and industrial clients. DAH Solar Unveils New High-Efficiency Photovoltaic Modules in Brazil Chinese solar giant DAH Solar has introduced groundbreaking photovoltaic modules featuring rectangular cells in Brazil. These new modules, part of the DHN-72R18 line, boast a power output exceeding 600W and incorporate TOPCon type N technology, promising enhanced energy generation capabilities compared to traditional square cell models. The 182mm x 192mm cells, equipped with TOPCon technology, are designed to optimize energy production, particularly in high-temperature environments, while exhibiting a lower degradation rate per year. Notably, the new modules offer a lighter and more compact design, allowing for increased power generation per square meter compared to conventional square cell modules. I glad to announce that my research article titled “Coupled Inductor based Boost Microinverter with Dual Mode Time Sharing Operation for Renewable Energy Applications” coauthored With Dr. Nabil A. Ahmed is accepted for publication in IEEE Access. Household power conversion stages process significant amounts of power when they add up to form a microgrid. Microinverters are considered one of the best choices to utilize the renewable energy harvested power. Microinverter integration encounters several challenges when interfaced with expanding microgrids. This paper proposes a coupled inductor-based boost microinverter operating in dual mode time sharing technique for renewable energy applications. It is composed of an absolute sinewave modulated voltage boost converter and series capacitor connected to the secondary winding of the coupled inductor followed by a single-phase Full bridge inverter. The coupled inductor integration allows a significant reduction in current ripple and improved energy conversion efficiency. In the proposed microinverter, the DC link voltage is not required to be constant, instead, it process an absolute sinewave modulated voltage and then it is unfolded to AC and fed into the grid. The DC link capacitor is substituted by an efficient AC thin film type capacitor. The dual mode time-sharing principle intends to reduce the switching losses of the microinverter and consequently achieves high conversion efficiency. The proposed converter’s analysis, design, and simulation are validated on a 2.0 kW setup system using PSIM simulation software. The feasibility and performance of this new microinverter topology is proved experimentally via laboratory prototype. For more information check the following link

We are excited to release our research paper ‘Renting Batteries’. It shows how Electric Vehicle (EV) batteries could be part of the solution of the energy storage problem hindering Australia’s transition to renewable energy. It finds: ▪️Australia’s energy storage requirements could increase more than tenfold between 2024 and 2040 ▪️Significant investment is required to keep up with these projected energy storage requirements ▪️EV owners could use their EV’s batteries to participate in an incentivised charge/discharge scheme, mitigating the hefty expenditure the government and consumers will incur in investing in energy storage infrastructure. The report, produced by NineSquared in partnership with Veitch Lister Consulting and Endgame Economics combines advanced modelling techniques to forecast Australia’s future energy demands and NineSquared's proprietary, agent-based synthetic population to estimate what it would take to incentivise EV owners to connect their vehicle to a grid.
