Solatube International, Inc.’s Post

Designed by SPF:architects (SPF:a), the redevelopment of the Michelle and Barack Obama Sports Complex in Los Angeles was not just about expansion—it was about redefining sustainability in sports infrastructure. Spanning more than 40,000 square feet, the project included essential features such as a 23,000-square-foot pool facility, a 16,000-square-foot basketball gymnasium, a raised walking track, and more—all seamlessly integrated into existing structures without disrupting current operations. The solution was to employ Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings (PEMBs) and combine them with custom elements to create a unique but cost-effective complex. The Obama Sports Complex wasn't just about aesthetics or necessity, but it also met stringent sustainability objectives. The project’s basketball wing is one of the first Net Zero Energy (NZE) buildings built by the city of Los Angeles.* Central to this achievement are Solatube Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs), which flood the basketball and swimming facilities with natural daylight, reducing reliance on electric lighting and curbing energy consumption. This approach not only earned LEED Silver certification but also ensures a well-lit and energy efficient environment for the community. I spent MANY hours of my youth swimming in indoor pools. Would've loved to have daylighting. Every new build should have tubes.
