The #WALKAWAY idea came to me about a month after my father passed away - it was early November 1998 and I have always felt that he was along for my journey. I certainly missed the conversations we might have had, especially around the #Hyundai Assurance program that came by way of being the right solution at a scary time and how, in the depths of a global financial crisis, it heightened the trajectory of one car manufacturer and it's brand image for a generation of car buyers. I know this deal would have boggled Dad's mind and I could only imagine his pride as a father. I do credit him for a lot of the inner entrepreneurship he fostered in me. I often reflect back to the times he and I would talk about business ideas while driving and one in particular that he predicted well before it ever happened; bags of firewood sold at gas stations. I thought he was crazy. I had a little firewood business in the late stages of high school; I delivered and stacked face cords for $40 (1979 - 1981). But dad saw that people didn't burn wood like we did, which was nightly, and they didn't want the mess or have a place for firewood and he predicted that small bags of firewood would be sold at gas stations. Most of us in the north know that that happened and we can buy wood pretty much at every gas station in Ontario. It was forward looking business ideas that we talked about that allowed me to see negative equity appearing, growing and it's challenges in auto lending and leasing that would continue to grow - and it did. In 1998 it was especially showing up in high residual auto leasing vs loans - but evident in both, and like bagged firewood that dad saw, I saw the future need of car buyers seeking relief from negative equity... It took a global financial crisis and an automotive company to take a risk on the idea ten years after it was born. And the value and integrity in which WALKAWAY was built upon didn't go unnoticed. Right out of the box it was OEM worthy and Hyundai Motor America looked to Insurance Insight Inc. and our US partner EFG Companies to launch a national program across 800 dealers in 34 days - start to finish. Two websites - consumer and dealer portal, training material, branded insurance certificates, regulatory approval, program agreements, underwriting approval, advertising reviews etc. - everyone was hands on each of the 34 days before the program launched. We kick it off with WALKAWAY’s appearance in a Super Bowl ad as Hyundai Assurance and our founding shareholders, Michael Croxon, Robert Varga, Vincent Beretta, and Bruce Croxon, discussing the deal, the company's beginnings, and the philosophies, values, and innovations that have set WALKAWAY apart for 25 years. The simple message of "We've Got Your Back" resonated with American car buyers like no other automotive advertising in history, propelling Hyundai to beat the market by 31%—a feat unheard of before or since. This campaign would later earn Goodby Silverstein & Partners a GOLD at the 2010 APAC Effie Awards for the Most Effective Automotive Campaign. Enjoy this clip.
