Global Top 50 Healthcare Voice ~ Former Chief Nurse Information Officer ~ Leading Digital Health & Workforce Solutions
Welcome to NurseFusion's Sunday Spotlight! We recently heard about Gold Coast Hospital's use of hotel rooms to help with patient loads. 💡 Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) has been exploring innovative solutions to manage patient overflow in response to increasing patient loads and capacity challenges. One such initiative involves utilising hotel rooms as interim care facilities for non-critical patients. This approach is part of a broader strategy by the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service (GCHHS) to ensure efficient patient flow and optimise hospital resources. 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 GCHHS has launched an Expression of Interest (EOI) seeking proposals for external beds to ease bed block and enhance patient flow. This initiative aims to provide alternative accommodations for medically stable patients who still require ongoing care. Using hotel rooms and other non-hospital settings helps free up hospital beds for more critical patients, ensuring that urgent care can be accommodated promptly (Gold Coast Health) (Health Services Daily). 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗹 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 ➡ Increased Capacity. By moving stable patients to hotels, GCUH can handle more emergency and critical care cases within the hospital. ➡ Patient Comfort. Hotel rooms offer a more comfortable and private recovery environment than traditional hospital wards. ➡ Resource Allocation. This strategy allows the hospital to allocate its medical resources and staff to the most needed areas better. ➡ Enhanced Recovery. Patients recovering in a home-like environment, such as a hotel, may experience fewer hospital-acquired complications like delirium and deconditioning. 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 The success of this initiative could pave the way for more widespread use of alternative care settings in managing patient loads. It demonstrates how healthcare systems can adapt to increasing demands and resource constraints through innovative solutions. This model may also reference other regions facing similar challenges, promoting a more flexible and resilient healthcare infrastructure. GCUH and GCHHS are taking significant steps towards enhancing patient care and optimising healthcare delivery amidst growing demands in exploring and adopting such innovative care models. This initiative addresses immediate needs and sets a precedent for future healthcare strategies. 👏 For healthcare professionals and administrators, the success of such programs demonstrates the importance of flexibility, innovation, and collaboration in addressing the ever-evolving challenges of patient care. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ggQCvcWG #bedblock #hosptials #innovation #solutions #nursefusion Kate Renzenbrink RN CHIA Dr Nathan Moore PhD FAIDH Katrina Matthews

"Great facilities open avenues to better care. Well-designed and well-built hospitals enable clinicians to serve patients more efficiently, improving productivity, while also being able to offer cutting-edge treatments that underpin better patient care." "Hospitals are infamously complex structures. They generally take a decade or more to go from concept to operational use, cover a massive footprint, require engagement with vast numbers of stakeholders, face both national and local political scrutiny and require differing teams to work concurrently towards a shared goal." #construction In Building Magazine, Daniel Easthope, director for property, UK and Europe at Mace examines the pressures on health services, the need for an assessment of healthcare estates and buildings, how great facilities can lead to better care for patients and more. https://lnkd.in/dW4EJga6
