The Pennsylvania Department of Education has given local education entities (LEAs) until Sept. 5 to put mechanisms in place to provide a free, appropriate public education (FAPE) to special education students until they turn 22, resulting in up to a year of additional eligibility for students and liability for school districts. In light of the Aug. 30 directive, districts should start planning immediately for how to accommodate these students, including those who aged out during the 2022-23 session, in the current school year and beyond. New research underscores the importance of family engagement in reducing chronic absenteeism. When looking at Illinois schools' 5Essentials results, schools with strong family engagement had "a 39% smaller increase in students' chronic absenteeism between 2019 and 2022—when schools nationwide were experiencing a rise in chronic absenteeism." Amongst other things, this article mentions pupil agency and curriculum reform in schools. These are two things I have believed for a while need to be considered a priority. I have met many children (mostly girls in my case) who struggle with the current school system and their families feel the only solution is to home-school them. Such an informed post from Alison Hesley that should resonate with so many parents. Choice is there - but it’s so difficult to access that it feels like a battle to wrestle the freedom of choice away from the dictats/expectations of a mainstream obsessed by attendance and results. Children will thrive in the right environment. Children represent our future. Why do we insist on not listening to their needs, and then not catering for them, when evidence points to better outcomes when they are heard and provided for? The what ifs? posed by Alison shouldn’t be what ifs at all. They should be no more than we have the right to expect. Choosing my GCSE options subjects back in 1984 seemed very exciting but that was the only time I had really a choice. Parents are led to believe they have choices in their child’s education. · We fill in primary school applications – but the recent bulge in pupils numbers, in my area, has led to many children not getting their first or even any of their choices. · We fill in the secondary school application form – the same thing may happen again. · If our children have an EHCP we can request a specialist provision - but the reality is that these are full so we are offered mainstream instead. · Our children have options choices – but only two if they are lucky because they need to do EBacc subjects. · We can opt to home educate our children – but now that this is becoming a more popular option we need to have a register and it needs to be monitored more closely. What if there really was choice? What if at the beginning of each key stage (and at interim times if necessary) parents could choose which type of education would best suit their child? What if there was a list of options like: · Large school · Small school · Online school · Autistic school · 1:1 tuition · Alternative provision focussing on arts, music, gaming · Funded home education · Self-directed learning centres · Flexi-schooling · And more… What if these options were available fully funded to all children and young people? What if children could choose to learn more about their passionate interests? What if children could develop their functional literacy and numeracy skills though their passionate interests? What if that meant that councils didn’t waste £100 million on SEND Tribunals each year, that there were no waiting lists for CAMHS, that there wouldn’t be a national shortage of Education Psychologists, that there wouldn’t be teacher recruitment shortage? What if that meant our children’s needs were met, that they had a positive sense of self and grew up to be autonomous young people who could advocate for themselves? #neurodiversityawareness #schools #homeeducation #autismawarness

Missing 10% of instruction time might not sound like that much. You're still there for 90% of instruction, right? But it has a cumulative impact. "But missing even occasional days can have a profound effect: A student who misses two days a month beginning in kindergarten will have missed the equivalent of an entire year of school by 12th grade." This story provides a good look at the growing absenteeism rate that many school districts are seeing. For the 2021-2022 school year, Hutchinson Public Schools USD 308 reported a chronic absenteeism rate of 30.6% (KSDE K.S.A. 72-5178 Accountability Report 2021-2022). https://lnkd.in/gxZ2GPq6
