When Eliseo (EJ) Juárez joined Solid Ground’s advocacy partner Statewide Poverty Action Network in 2011, he spent a lot of time “talking to people across the state who seemed to be talked about a lot but never talked directly to”. Since then, EJ’s work has taken him deeper into community, and further up in leadership — most recently with the Department of Natural Resources as their Director of Equity and Environmental Justice. Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we acknowledge the deep and ongoing impact of systemic injustice on Indigenous communities. Indigenous women are disproportionately affected by homelessness, violence, and trauma—legacies of colonialism and the effects of assimilation. The statistics are clear: - Indigenous women in Canada are three times more likely to experience violence than non-Indigenous women. - Over 40% of Indigenous women experience homelessness at some point in their lives, often as a result of fleeing unsafe living situations or intergenerational trauma. - Systemic barriers continue to perpetuate cycles of poverty, making Indigenous women more vulnerable to housing insecurity and violence. At the YWCA, we see these impacts firsthand. We stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities, striving to create safe spaces for healing, support, and rebuilding lives. On this day, we urge everyone to not only reflect but to take action in dismantling the systems that feed into these inequalities. Let's continue working towards allyship, truth, reconciliation, and justice—for all🧡

Some of the SustainMe communities are nestled in remote, hilly regions surrounded by terrain and dense vegetation. The communities are isolated with non paved roads leading to them, making access a challenge. To reach these communities, volunteers and mentors must embark on a journey that involves navigating narrow, winding paths that cut through thick vegetation and flowing water. One of the most scary obstacle faced is crossing the locally made bridge that connects the two communities. The bridge is built from large rocks carefully placed by the community members over time which are slippery during the rainy season. Despite the risks, SustainMe volunteers and mentors are always determined to reach the vulnerable women in the community. The journey may be challenging but the impact of the support and mentorship provided to these less fortunate women is profound, helping them gain the skills and confidence needed to improve their lives despite the isolation from government services and the hardships they face. #communityempowerment #sustainabledevelopment #mentors #volunteers #poverty #sustainme #impact #uganda #skills

Absolutely brilliant session with Allies for Children Australia on Friday hosted at Barnardos Australia offices. The founding CEO's came together to map their commitments to addressing the over-representation of Aboriginal and Tores Strait Islander children in care and to talk about strategic priorities for the year ahead. Right now in Australia, an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander child is 11 times more likely to be in out-of-home care than compared to their non-Indigenous peers. Allies for Children will contribute to addressing this major issue in three key ways: - Modelling change in our own organisations - Supporting change in the sector by sharing knowledge, experiences and resources - Advocating with Peak's and working in partnership with ACCO's and Government to support First Nations people to lead the response they know is needed to support children, families and communities. Joining the Allies was representation from the First Nations Non-Government Alliance who provided insight, leadership and recommendations to Allies for Children on the best way their organisations can truly contribute to Close the Gap targets and beyond. A great example that we are stronger together when we partner in common goals and when we stop and listen to First Nations Leadership. #children #childrenandfamilies #advocacy24 #reconciliation #partnership #collaboration Claire Robbs Lin Hatfield Dodds Dr Lisa J.
