Does this sound familiar? Mary is an area manager. In an attempt to help one of her stores out of a sales slump, she’s been helping Amelia, the store manager by: - Spending time on the floor to help her hit her budget - Acting as a mediator between two team members - Training her new assistant store manager But despite all of Mary’s efforts, Amelia only became less motivated and more dependent on Mary. Why? Mary’s accommodating leadership style, a direct result of her fear of being disliked, was disempowering Amelia. In true accommodating form, the high level of support Mary was offering wasn’t aligned with her much lower expectations of Amelia’s performance. By working within her leadership style, and making some slight adjustments, Mary could balance results and relationships while empowering Amelia to deliver the performance required of an effective store manager. According to a 2023 study by global leadership consulting firm DDI, “only 40% of leaders reported their company to have high-quality leaders,” which was 17% lower than in 2021 and the “biggest decline in a decade.” The firm pinpointed two reasons for the leadership downswing. First, the absence of trust—merely 46% of leaders indicated that they “fully trust their direct manager to do what’s right” and “fewer than one in three trust senior leaders within their organization.” Second, leaders at all levels are struggling to find purpose and meaning in their work.
