Working 55 or more hours per week is associated with an estimated 35% higher risk of a stroke compared to working 35-40 hours a week. Working long hours is now known to be responsible for about one-third of the total estimated work-related burden of disease, and the risk factor with the largest occupational disease burden. This shifts thinking towards a more psychosocial occupational risk factor to human health. A healthy workplace isn’t just about being clean, well lit, and properly ventilated. It means providing workers sufficient breaks during working hours to rest, and sufficient time away from work to recuperate. Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) announced this week a concerning spike in high potential incidents (HPI) over the last week. HPIs are near-miss incidents that have the potential to cause a fatality or serious injury. HPIs reported in the last week included: • Mobile equipment collision • Unplanned movement of mobile equipment • Methane ignition underground While a critical concern for the industry and particularly for Site Senior Executives, RSHQ also links the learnings from these incidents to two key principles of High-Reliability Organisations (HROs): Principle 1: Preoccupation with Failure The information in the RSHQ notice supports the need to focus on how things could fail in your operations. Principle 2: Reluctance to Simplify Instead of explaining away problems, they conduct root cause analysis and reject simple diagnoses. Tribute to the father :Mitigating Train Station Incidents in Sydney: https://lnkd.in/gMDwkPbM I dedicate today to honour the heroic father who gave his life to protect his children on the incident that took place on 21st July at Carlton Railway Station this year, where a stroller slipped onto the tracks, leading to the heartbreaking loss of a father and his child. As a security risk professional, I am reflecting on the vulnerability highlighted by this incident. Learning from the past is essential to prevent future occurrences. In addition to advanced physical barriers seen on metro lines, security teams should consider the following measures. Reflective Questions for Onboarding and Training for Security Companies 1. How effective is our onboarding process in selecting, recruiting, and retaining staff familiar with the specific risks associated with train stations? 2. Are all team members trained to recognise non-verbal cues and behaviors that indicate potential threats? 3. How frequently do our officers participate in situational awareness training? 4. Are regular risk assessments conducted, and do our teams understand how to apply the findings? 5. How well do our security officers respond to emergency situations involving train tracks? 6. Is our emergency response training comprehensive enough to cover a wide range of potential incidents? 7. Do our officers have the necessary skills to provide immediate support to bystanders and families affected by incidents? 8. How confident are we in the mental health support skills of our security personnel? 9. Are we adequately evaluating the experience and training of potential hires during the onboarding process? 10. Do we have clear protocols in place for managing trauma and mental health crises on-site? By addressing these points and reflecting on our current practices, we can better protect the public and improve safety across our transport systems.

First Hop Redundancy Protocols (FHRP) - Overview

What has regulations got to do with dropped object prevention? Our second DROPS Canadian Chapter meeting in April 2024 focused on the theory and practice of dropped object prevention, well delivered by 3M. It was another reminder that dropped object prevention is important and that there is a science behind prevention strategies. Our meetings are set up to provide education and collaboration opportunities for the attendees. You can join for our next meeting in June. Along with this good delivery was the provision of compendium of regulations (see attached) that provide requirements for dropped object prevention in Canada. The question is “what has regulations got to do with dropped object prevention?” I can tell you that it has a lot to do with it. Several of them have been written due to serious incidents and injuries, including fatalities, and to provide consistency in the execution of dropped prevention requirements. While regulations are good, they should be the barest minimum any organization should implement. Organizations should strive to go a step further than regulations. Overall, regulations on dropped object prevention play a crucial role in safeguarding lives, promoting workplace safety, ensuring legal compliance, and protecting the interests of businesses and communities.
