Today, we pause to reflect on Juneteenth – also known as Freedom Day and Emancipation Day. It marks a cornerstone in American history: the abolition of slavery and the long-awaited enforcement of emancipation in the last Confederate state. #Juneteenth #weservetennesseans

On this day in history 01/01/24. In 1863 the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln to free slaves in US Confederate states. The Emancipation Proclamation, officially Proclamation 95, was a presidential proclamation and executive order issued by United States President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, during the American Civil War. The Proclamation had the effect of changing the legal status of more than 3.5 million enslaved African Americans in the secessionist Confederate states from enslaved to free. As soon as slaves escaped the control of their enslavers, either by fleeing to Union lines or through the advance of federal troops, they were permanently free. In addition, the Proclamation allowed for former slaves to “be received into the armed service of the United States”. The Emancipation Proclamation was a significant part of the end of slavery in the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation did not free all slaves in the U.S., contrary to a common misconception; it applied in the ten states that were still in rebellion on January 1, 1863, but it did not cover the nearly 500,000 slaves in the slaveholding border states (Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware) or in parts of Virginia and Louisiana that were no longer in rebellion. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had freed most slaves as a war measure, it had not make slavery illegal. The 13th Amendment in December 1865 ended slavery. Now you know. Issued 161 years ago today by President Abraham Lincoln, the #EmanicpationProclaimation marked a crucial turning point in the fight against slavery. Despite not ending slavery nationwide, it further ignited the path toward liberation. Before its creation, African Americans, enslaved and free, advocated for freedom through various means, pushing the nation towards a more inclusive manifestation of liberty. Their continuous fight ultimately led to the abolishment of slavery with the 13th Amendment in 1865. Today, as we work towards a more equitable South, let's draw inspiration from the resilience of those who fought for freedom and commit to dismantling the remnants of systemic inequities. 1: On June 19, 1865, news that the remaining slaves in the Union (part of the US that opposed slavery during the civil war) were freed reached the last slaves in Galveston, Texas. June 19 (Juneteenth) is celebrated as the official end of slavery in America. 2: In 1854, the Republican Party was founded by antislavery democrats after the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. 3: On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the US, and first republican president. 4: On September 22, 1862, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which called for the freeing of slaves in the Union during the civil war. America also recognized the independence of Haiti and Liberia, the only two independent black republics in the world at the time, in 1862. 5: On January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation came into effect. 6: On December 18, 1865, the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified — LEGALLY ending slavery in the entire US. P.S. The history of slavery is a part of American history, it’s not simply a Democratic Party or Republican Party thing. Slavery existed in America long before both the Democratic Party (1828) and the Republican Party (1854) were founded.
