Helping nonprofit execs diversify revenue & scale gen-ops dollars so they can invest in infrastructure to grow.
Nonprofit CEOs: The number of Develoment Director job postings I've seen float across my screen over the last two weeks alone is staggering... For the candidates, it appears the options are endless. For the organization hiring, it feels like an opportunity AND a risk. There's always so much riding on this role - Can they do they job they said they can? Will cash flow be ok until they get up to speed? Will they stay in the role longer than few years? All valid questions. Leaders - you have more control over this than you think. But you have to set your organization up for success BEFORE you make this hire. Some things might need to shift under the waterline of the iceberg before you bring someone into this role. How do I know this? Well, too many orgs come to me after revenue isn't growing post-hire and can't figure out why. This is the business behind the fundrasing that I speak about often. Fix that and you'll fix your funding problem. Then your new hire and department can do their jobs. Honestly, it's critical to your top candidate's success. Take a read below. What would you add?
Helping nonprofit execs diversify revenue & scale gen-ops dollars so they can invest in infrastructure to grow.
Nonprofit CEOs - A leader came to inquire on the timing of re-hiring a Development Director role they’ve struggled to keep filled. My advice? Wait. Why? They aren’t ready. Do they need more money? Yes. But, for the position to stick this time around, they need to shore up some core areas that are blocking healthy revenue generation, and frankly, sabotaging the success of the person in that position. Those things that are blocking revenue generation? They must be fixed at the root so that your entire organization and future staff member can ATTRACT investment-level donors. Wondering if this might be you? Start by looking at three core areas that KEEP donors from giving larger gifts and STOP fundraisers from being effective: ➡️ PLANS - Do your donors know your larger, strategic objectives? Do they know WHY you need their money every year? ➡️ PROGRAMS - Do your donors REALLY know what you do? The REAL problem their gift will solve? ➡️ NEED - Do your donors know you need their money? Seriously. Do you have the financial plans in place where you can sit down and have investment-level conversations? Donors don’t ever give their best gift if one of these areas isn’t clear. These are not ‘fundraising shifts”...these are shifts of organizational clarity. And that’s what investment-level donors are dying to hear from you. No new fundraising staff member will fix this. These must be translated into the donor’s POV. Fix these at the root, and your #fundraising hires will be more successful. I see it every day. How about you? What’s one shift you need to make today?

Project Manager | Social Media Manager & Virtual Assistant | The Villain Against Brand Chaos & Missed Deadlines by Night | Community Manager & Career Development Advocate by Day
Growing up, I never had a dream job or a dream company. I still don’t! Am I weird? Maybe. I see people who dream of working at places like Chevron, Google, Microsoft, or other big-name companies. Do I have an issue with working in such places? Not at all. But I have a deep love for seeing things grow. My younger sister always laughs at me for loving small places, small churches, small organizations, small teams, etc. But that's just who I am: someone who thrives on the challenge and satisfaction of being part of something from its early stages and watching it grow. There's something incredibly rewarding about doing the hard work and seeing the tangible results of your efforts, rather than joining a place where much of the groundwork has already been laid. It's not that I'm scared I wouldn't make an impact in an already established organization, because whether it's working for an individual, a startup, or a big organization I consistently bring my top game to ensure my impact is felt. Are you like me, or do you have a dream company? Let me know in the comments! Ps: A picture of me as a volunteer and social media manager for Pick A Pad for Girls Initiative a growing non-profit organization👇🏽🤷🏽♀️ #DreamJob #CareerGrowth #StartupLife #SmallTeams #PassionForGrowth #PickAPad #SocialMediaManager #Volunteer

As the world continues to navigate complex social, environmental, and economic challenges, the role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Social Impact initiatives has never been more crucial. While it can remain lip service and be the first part of the business to get the boot during layoffs, there are trends I have been very happy to see: 💪𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Employees increasingly seek meaningful work that aligns with their values. CSR/Social Impact initiatives are not only great for staff retention, but they also impact customer loyalty and the company's value. Companies are responding by truly involving employees in CSR initiatives, from volunteer programs to sustainability projects. Offering paid volunteer days, matching donations, and creating internal sustainability champions programs are becoming standard practices. 🤝𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗡𝗼𝗻𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀: Instead of short-term donations or one-off projects, companies are forming long-term, strategic partnerships with nonprofits and NGOs. These partnerships are designed to create sustainable, long-term impact in areas such as education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation (Here is a pic with another dream team strengthening the capacity of nonprofit partners in their digital journey). 🤖𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵-𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Technology is a game-changer in the CSR space! From AI-driven sustainability solutions to digital platforms that facilitate global collaboration, tech innovation transforms how companies approach social impact. 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗦𝗥/𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁? #SocialImpact #CSR #Sustainability #ESG #CorporateResponsibility #EmployeeEngagement #TechForGood #SustainableBusiness #Leadership

Friday, July 5, 2024 17:57 From: Dr. Richard Francis Viktor Hogan Re: Ways to Harness Creativity - Non-profit Managers N.B.: Please refer to my “Post” for the complete narrative on this strategic subject. 💯 Certainly! Non-profit managers can harness creativity to navigate challenges and find innovative solutions. 🆘 Remember, creativity is a powerful tool for non-profits to address complex challenges and create positive change. ✔️ Here’s how: (1) Reframe Problems: • Encourage managers to view challenges from different angles. • Creative thinking involves questioning assumptions and reframing problems to uncover fresh insights. (2) Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: • Foster collaboration across departments and fields. • Diverse perspectives lead to creative solutions. • For example, involve program staff, fundraisers, and tech experts in brainstorming sessions. (3) Design Thinking: • Adopt design thinking principles. • Understand user needs, ideate, prototype, and iterate. • Apply this approach to program development, donor engagement, and organizational processes. (4) Experiment and Learn: • Create a culture of experimentation. • Test new approaches, measure outcomes, and learn from failures. • Encourage calculated risk-taking. (5) Storytelling and Advocacy: • Use storytelling to convey impact. • Creative narratives resonate with donors and stakeholders. • Advocacy campaigns benefit from compelling stories. (6) Adapt Technology Creatively: • Explore low-cost tech solutions. • Leverage social media, crowdfunding, and virtual events. • Creatively use existing tools for maximum impact. (7) Empower Staff Creativity: • Managers should empower staff to contribute ideas. • Encourage brainstorming sessions and recognize innovative thinking. -30-

The Revolving Door of Fundraising... Tell me if you’ve heard this story before (or in many cases lived it): I hired a Development Officer (let’s call them an Associate/Manager/Director), but they couldn’t fulfill all the duties that were asked of them, our fundraising outcomes didn’t change significantly, despite all the coaching and recommendations from our management team and Board improvement didn’t happen, and the Development Associate ultimately quit or was let go. If you haven’t experienced this you’re lucky because the average Development Officer keeps their position for about 16 months before changing jobs. Keep reading here: https://lnkd.in/gTz2VdBc I know I don't have the solution, but I'm are there solutions? How do we fix this problem? I've got a few ideas but I want to hear yours as well.

We're used to hearing about "serial founders" in the tech world but I've rarely heard it applied in a non-profit/social impact context. It's not because these folks don't exist. Just look at Alicia Teagle. Co-founder of socially responsible recruitment startup SR2, founder of Technology Volunteers, founding member of women's network Chief (recognised as one of TIME's 100 most influential companies), founder of Women Rock - A Voice For Diversity In Tech. The list goes on. We should be celebrating more serial social impact and non-profit founders. But we need a better word than "serial". "Serial" is mechanical; all emphasis is on repeating the process. I prefer "prolific". The emphasis is on creative output instead of process. It's also more generous. To create prolifically is to create abundantly, meaning your efforts result in more than enough for everyone. Exactly what social impact is all about. My Q&A with Alicia drops tomorrow. "From ‘Data Lake’ to ‘Doom Loop,’ the Philanthropy Buzzwords We’ll Be Hearing in 2024." Lucy Bernholz's predictions include: • DATA LAKE: a shared repository of data stored and secured for use by multiple authorized users • DONOR CODES OF CONDUCT: Perhaps an outgrowth of the #MeToo movement and informed by growing calls to make fundraising more community-centric • DOOM LOOP: Many cities/towns are experiencing major shifts in the use of office space, raising concerns about the vitality of downtown centers. • SALARY TRANSPARENCY: The movement got a big boost from state laws requiring salary listings in all job postings.
