Confession: Ed Consultants still have "first days of school" too! Hence, the late night post due to the "first day" of school tomorrow. Tomorrow kicks off another year of the Effective Advising Framework pilot. The Texas Education Agency has partnered with TNTP as the consultants to lead the work. We start with a Welcome Webinar consisting of 51 - yes FIFTY ONE - districts in Texas and an additional 12 education service centers. I think the best thing about pilots is the ability to research and learn what went well and the CHANGE for the better for the future pilots. And that's what we are doing this year and I couldn't be more excited. The Effective Advising Framework ensures robust individual planning systems so that all students in Texas graduate college and career ready. While we are still in the pilot phase of consisting of 51 districts, this framework will ultimately reach all 1000 districts and impact more than 5 million students in the state. How's that for first day jitters?

Data is indispensable for framing problems, especially when the problem we’re solving is in our behavior data. Used well, data uncovers who, what, when, where, how often, and how intensely a problem is occurring, and this makes developing solutions much easier. However, knowing something is a problem is different from doing something to address the issue. Too often, schools and districts involve an enormous amount of staff in examining data, framing problems, and reporting findings, but have no systematic way for implementing solutions. The truth is that solving problems is the real work of PBIS…anything less than that is a fancy poster and a popcorn party. For example, what if a district knew that, year after year, inappropriate physical contact on playgrounds and hallways was an issue. And year after year, not one staff member thought about how to: -Prevent physical contact with better adult supervision. -Recognize students who make safe choices. -Reteach students the skill of keeping hands and feet to ourselves and thinking smart when we’re angry. As a corrective consequence, assign students who fail to keep hands and feet to themselves a highly supervised place and manner of play during recess. -Create restorative structures and practices for students to repair harm when necessary. Each of these strategies holds the potential to effectively address the issue. However, it's important to remember that data alone is not enough to implement a strategy. To truly realize the power of PBIS and data, action is critical. #PBIS #PLC #PBISRewards
