♻The 2024 edition of the most comprehensive technology and market report on Advanced Plastic Waste Recycling is finally here! It was a pleasure collaborating with nova-Institut GmbH to support the development of this report, which profiles more than 130 available technologies and providers of advanced and especially #chemicalrecycling solutions, as well as pre-and post-processing technologies. The report highlights that of all installed chemical and physical #recycling plants worldwide, more than 60, and therefore the majority, are operating in Europe, covering nearly one-quarter of the worldwide input capacity. This ranks Europe at the top of the global comparison. Additionally, the global production capacity of #advancedrecycling is 1,082 kt per annum, with products ranging from polymers, monomers, naphtha, Secondary Valuable Chemicals (SVC), and fuels & energy. An analysis of the announcements made by technology providers for the construction of new plants shows that the input capacity in #Europe is expected to grow more than 3x by 2027. Globally, the capacity is expected to double. Be sure to check out the executive summary (PDF attached 👇) for more information. 💚Special thanks to Lars Krause, Michael Carus, and Achim Raschka. #plasticsindustry #plasticsrecycling #circulareconomy #plastics #plasticwastemanagement #technologytrends #marketresearchreport

Fighting the plastic crisis / Social and environmental impact / Empowering plastic cleanup organisations
The terms "bioplastic," "biobased," "compostable," and "biodegradable" are often associated with environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional plastics. However, what does it actually mean? First of all, there are slight differences between all these terms. But Lisa Erdle explains it in a simplified way: ' When something is biodegradable, it will break down into its component parts, it will mineralise, meaning that it will turn into its natural molecules.' It's however crucial to be cautious about the use of these terms by companies, as they can sometimes be misleading. For example, a product labelled as "biodegradable" may only break down under specific conditions that might not be directly available in natural environments, leading to the persistence of the material. It will for example not likely degrade on your street, and similarly not in the ocean, rivers, lakes or even your compost bin. Shifting from plastic is positive, but responsible practices are crucial. It is very interesting to learn more about this topic! The main trends in 2024 haven't changed that much compared to recent years but some things are really changing: -Regulation 👩⚖️ : Now the EU and the US are introducing more strict rules for plastics, additives, and chemicals (PFAS), single-use plastics. -Recycling system rethink ♻ : The governments are aware that recycle system as it is has failed. In 20 years we haven't been able to surpass 10% of the recycling rate globally and now, for the first time, the approach is to reduce plastic production. In Nairobi at the UN encounter, some leaders talked about this possibility.
