Strategic Framework Integration: Crafting Cohesive and Innovative Business Strategies 🌐🚀 These six strategy frameworks offer a comprehensive toolkit for business leaders to navigate the complexities of today’s market environments. Each framework brings a unique perspective and method for crafting strategy, allowing leaders to approach their strategic planning from multiple angles. Let’s briefly explore how these frameworks can be integrated and applied: 1. WHO-WHAT-HOW (by Costas Markides) • Integration: Use the WHO-WHAT-HOW framework as the foundational layer to identify target customers, product/service offerings, and delivery mechanisms. • Application: Start by aligning the organization’s efforts towards a specific market segment, setting the stage for further strategic development. 2. PLAYING TO WIN STRATEGY CHOICE CASCADE (PtW) (by Roger Martin) • Integration: Build on the WHO-WHAT-HOW basics by adding layers of strategic choice regarding where to compete and how to win. • Application: Define winning aspirations, make deliberate choices on where to play and how to win, identify necessary capabilities, and design a supportive management system for coherent and aligned strategic choices. 3. STRATEGY DIAMOND (by Donald Hambrick and James Frederickson) • Integration: Enhance the strategic depth by incorporating differentiators and economic logic into the strategy. • Application: Develop a nuanced approach to competitive advantage and profitability, aligning organizational configuration with strategic objectives. 4. BLUE OCEAN STRATEGY (by Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne) • Integration: Expand the strategic mindset by exploring new market spaces beyond existing competition. • Application: Use Blue Ocean Strategy for innovation, differentiation, and growth strategies, identifying unique value propositions and creating uncontested market opportunities. 5. STRATEGY MAPS (by Robert Kaplan and David Norton) • Integration: Provide a visual tool for aligning and communicating various components of the strategy. • Application: Illustrate how financial, customer, operational, and learning perspectives interconnect, ensuring strategic choices are coherent and reinforcing throughout the organization. 6. THE KERNEL OF GOOD STRATEGY (by Richard Rumelt) • Integration: Emphasize clarity in diagnosing strategic challenges, formulating guiding policies, and defining coherent actions. • Application: Use Rumelt’s framework as a critical test for strategic plans, ensuring focus, actionability, and effectiveness in overcoming organizational challenges. By integrating these frameworks thoughtfully, business leaders can craft strategies that are innovative, competitive, coherent, and aligned with the organization’s long-term vision. This strategic approach enables leaders to navigate the complexities of the modern business landscape, driving growth, and creating lasting value. #StrategicIntegration #BusinessStrategy #CompetitiveAdvantage🌟📈🔍

6 Strategy Frameworks Every Leader Needs to Know In today's fast-paced business environment, having a clear and effective strategy is more crucial than ever. Here are six strategy frameworks that can help leaders structure their thinking, explore innovative paths, and ultimately craft breakthrough strategies: ⎯ 1️⃣ WHO-WHAT-HOW A simple yet powerful starting point for your strategy. ➟ WHO should we target as our customers? ➟ WHAT products and services should we offer? ➟ HOW can we best deliver this offering to these customers? by Costas Markides ⎯ 2️⃣ PLAYING TO WIN STRATEGY CHOICE CASCADE (PtW) This framework helps you think about your strategy in a structured way. ➟ Winning Aspirations: Our ambitions ➟ Where to play: Customers, offerings, geographies, channels ➟ How to win: Low cost or differentiation ➟ Capabilities: Distinctive capabilities that underpin our HtW ➟ Management System: How we build and maintain the capabilities by Roger Martin ⎯ 3️⃣ STRATEGY DIAMOND Similar to the PtW cascade, with a couple of additions. What I like about the Diamond is its distinction between „differentiators“ and „economic logic.“ I often plug this into „How to Win“ when using PtW. ↳ How to win with customers. ↳ How to win as a business. And the strategic moves for implementing your strategy, which IMHO, is missing in PtW. BTW: Capabilities and Management Systems are referred to as „supporting organizational configuration“ in this framework, but outside of the Diamond. by Donald Hambrick and James Frederickson ⎯ 4️⃣ BLUE OCEAN STRATEGY I think of BOS as less of a strategy framework per se and more of a set of tools that helps you generate answers you can plug into PtW or the Strategy Diamond. BOS is especially suited for creating new growth businesses, but it can also help you explore ideas for differentiation in your existing businesses. Strategy is about being different, which requires innovation. by Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne ⎯ 5️⃣ STRATEGY MAPS As strategy needs to be coherent, Strategy Maps help to visualize how the various parts of your strategy fit together and how your choices reinforce each other. They are good for checking whether your decisions make sense. Also, think about the various perspectives as follows: ➟ Financials: Short-term ➟ Customers: External ➟ Operations: Internal ➟ Learning: Long-term by Robert Kaplan and David Norton ⎯ 6️⃣ THE KERNEL OF GOOD STRATEGY The core of good strategy is focusing on the crucial challenges that must be solved to achieve your ambitions. Hence, make sure that your strategy always: ➟ Provides a diagnosis of that challenge ➟ Outlines how you’re going to deal with the challenge ➟ A coherent set of actions to implement your solution by Richard Rumelt ⎯ 👉 What are your go-to strategy frameworks? The "WHO-WHAT-HOW" framework seems like a fantastic starting point for any strategy discussion, while PtW offers a structured approach for diving deeper. It's interesting to see how the Strategy Diamond builds on PtW with the differentiation and economic logic distinction. I can definitely see the value in plugging that into the "How to Win" section. Thanks for sharing this informative overview!

It's one thing to have office graphics with one motto. It's another to look at an office graphic that CHALLENGES YOU. A QUESTION that makes you wake up even when you're exhausted. Imagine you're halfway through a report at the 11th hour. You see 'Who is our target customer?' And you have to think. 'Wait. Who IS our target customer again? Why am I doing any of this?' Then you look at your other essential office graphics. Perhaps one on judgment. And you remember. Every single moment is a crossroads where your direct action is demanded. And you must seek out better judgment. This is an example of a possible sequence within your systems of systems and processes of processes. 1. Your 1st chart's sharp question woke you up. 2. Your 2nd chart reminded you what range of decisions are available. 3. You make that critical decision. Do you call it quits? Change course? Phone a colleague for a quick chat? Re-confirm instructions? Go for a quick walk for a breath of fresh air? Duck out to get a beverage? 4. Ask: But is this my best work? My very best? With these things. You must rehearse it all. Perfectly. Step by step. Step 1. I use this graphic for this purpose. Step 2. I use that graphic for that purpose. etc. Rehearse in the calm of peacetime. So when it's heated in the battles of deadlines, you're an expert. You can even number them with a sticker. And write down your sequence so you can look at it and it's just a handful of numbers. To simplify such complex things to such divine simplicity? Absolutely brilliant. The very best stand ups sometimes do that. They'll have long jokes and a list of 5 words on their hand for each 'bit'. Very evocative words chosen to stimulate the very most vivid memories of their best stories and jokes. As all memory enthusiasts will tell you. The more ABSURD and VISCERAL and AMUSING and LUDICROUS the images are that you associate with things to be remembered? The easier it is. This is one of the 1000 ways that we know that boringness kills creativity and innovation, branding, marketing and brilliance. Profits. Even our memories don't function when things are too: 1. Colourless 2. Out of focus or imprecise 3. Dull 4. Humourless 5. Banal These are the exact opposite of OFFICE VIRTUES. They are cardinal office sins. The death of excellence and profitability. The beginning of burnout, dreams of islands and anywhere-but-here daydreams. If you have these? It's a sign, honey. Ask yourself why. Are you not present? Why not? Is it a healthy meditation on something you love? Or a distraction that reminds you that you aren't where you want to be? If it's a healthy meditation that's great! Only you know the difference. But that's YET another reason to make our office walls endlessly colourful, inspiring and funny-yet-wise. So we don't accidentally, incidentally, or deliberately disassociate ourselves from productivity. Imagine a school where kids stare at pictures of Jags instead of studying. What?!

🌟 Corporate Vs Business Strategy: Unlocking Organizational Success 🌟 As a Director of Innovation, I've had the privilege of working with thought leaders and C-level executives to create content that drives growth and success. Today, I want to share with you the key differences between corporate strategy and business strategy, and why understanding both is crucial for achieving organizational success. Corporate strategy is the overarching plan that guides an organization in allocating resources and positioning itself in the market. It's the big picture, long-term vision that sets the direction for the entire company. On the other hand, business strategy focuses on the competitive advantage and objectives of a specific business unit or department. It's more short to medium-term and crafted by middle-level management. 🔍 At the business level, competition comes from companies within a specific industry. Each business segment has its own set of competitors that directly impact pricing, customer acquisition, and market share. For example, Innoson Motors competes with other car manufacturers like Toyota or Honda. 🌐 At the corporate level, the competition shifts focus. Instead of worrying about individual competitors, the goal becomes managing a portfolio of businesses. For example, Dangote Group competes not just with other cement producers or sugar companies, but also with other multi-business corporations, private equity investors, and mutual fund managers. Corporate strategists compete through selection and modification. They choose which businesses to invest in or acquire, and then focus on making those businesses work better together. In more developed markets, simply selecting undervalued businesses may not be enough. Companies need to focus on modifying and improving their businesses to stay competitive. 🚀 So, why is understanding both corporate and business strategy important? Because it allows organizations to achieve growth and competitiveness. Business strategy helps determine where to play and how to win in the market, while corporate strategy focuses on resource management, process improvements, risk management, and maximizing returns across all business units. 🔑 By considering both strategies, companies can align their goals, allocate resources effectively, and adapt to changing market conditions. It's the perfect recipe for success in today's complex business landscape. Now, I'd love to hear your thoughts! How do you see the relationship between corporate and business strategy in your organization? Share your experiences and let's foster a discussion on achieving organizational success together. 💬 #CorporateStrategy #BusinessStrategy #OrganizationalSuccess #GrowthMindset #Innovation #ThoughtLeadership
