More than 20,000 students qualified as Chartered Accountants yesterday. Over the years, my anecdotal observation has been that more CAs want to go into fields like equity research, PE and VC and less into traditional areas like audit and taxation.
However, in the last 2 years of interviewing fresher CAs for the position of a research analyst, I have made some observations that could help CAs and other candidates as well looking to make a career in equity research –
1. You inherently need to be curious. Your research while studying a company is constantly going to throw more questions at you than the answers you get. You should have the drive to get those answers.
2. It goes without saying that equity research needs you to read a lot and also needs you to think intuitively. A lot of work that candidates do during their articleship involves taking the data and putting it into a different formats. This is not going to work in research. There are no boundaries to your research work which could be a good thing and a bad thing if you are used to ‘fill up data in formats’.
3. You cannot be at point 0 with your equity research at the time of interviews. You need to have begun your equity research earlier which could be either to invest your own money or just to understand companies. This could be in the form of reading annual reports, knowing how certain businesses work, segments of their revenues, drivers of their growth, etc. A pro tip here: Try to pen your thoughts regarding the companies you read in the form of a blog or on Linkedin/X. Articulating your research into words takes your work to another level.
4. While we are at articulating research work, I have observed a lot of equity research aspirants make beautiful PDFs that are very slick like the research reports of brokerage houses. You don’t need that. You don’t need to bombard the reader with a lot of data which one can anyway find on any website to present your candidature. In fact, it makes your report look like a copy-paste of another report and you can always rephrase things using Chat GPT. Rather, give me the inferences. For example - I would be more interested in reading your take on the company’s valuations or your take on why or why not would the next year be good for the company than being presented with data about its current valuations, past valuations, or even future projections. Also, these things need not be in a fancy format. Just putting your inferences in a presentable manner on a plain white background is good enough.
Having been into equity research for the last few years, I would say that if you are truly curious about how businesses work and research is your thing, then equity research is the place to be. You learn new things every day, hardly any day is like any other and work simply doesn’t feel like ‘work’. If the above points resonate with you, do apply.
