As #Japan is prone to earthquakes and typhoons, one of our most important missions is to help create disaster-resilient communities. The "Bousai JAPAN-DA Project," led by Sompo Japan's mascot JAPAN-DA, is a #disaster #prevention education program for children and their parents to learn what to do during disasters. The project was launched in 2014 and by the end of July 2024, the total number of participants had exceeded a hundred thousand! During the "Koshigaya Lake Town Bousai Fest 2024," the largest disaster prevention event in the Tokyo metropolitan area, Sompo Japan exhibited kamishibai (paper theater) and carried out workshops on making paper dishes from newspapers📰 These paper dishes were useful in the aftermath of some of Japan's worst earthquakes in the past. Participants were amazed that they could be used repeatedly by covering them with plastic bags. Learn more about the project (in Japanese) ➡🔗https://lnkd.in/gNF3yeUm

Japan is preparing for a potential once-in-a-century earthquake, and the stakes couldn't be higher. The Nankai Trough, a deep-sea fault line, has experts sounding the alarm on the possibility of a devastating quake that could reshape the landscape and impact millions. As we watch Japan's proactive measures—ranging from infrastructure reinforcements to nationwide drills—it's a stark reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness. This situation underscores the need for global resilience strategies in the face of natural disasters. #DisasterPreparedness #Resilience #Japan #EarthquakeSafety #NankaiTrough https://lnkd.in/g7zdUR4y

The Skopje earthquake was also a remarkable instance of the first notable cooperation during the Cold War, where the United States and the Soviet Union, along with the Yugoslavian army, joined forces to save lives in the aftermath of the devastating event. The earthquake had left around 80% of the city decimated and claimed the lives of over a thousand individuals. This event demonstrated that despite the geopolitical tensions of the time, the two superpowers could work together for significant humanitarian benefits. This global collaboration was particularly notable considering that just a few months earlier, the world was facing the Cuban Missile Crisis, with the United States and the Soviet Union on the brink of nuclear war. Despite the overarching geopolitical tensions of the Cold War, the shared goal of protecting human lives and addressing a global crisis brought the USA and the USSR together. It exemplifies how humanitarian concerns can rise above political divides, leading to collaborative efforts that benefit people regardless of national boundaries. After the Skopje event, the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology, IZIIS (https://lnkd.in/gEu2z3VJ), was established on May 27, 1965, to oversee and assist in the reconstruction of Skopje as part of the University of Skopje, based on the recommendation of the International Advisory Board led by UNESCO and with the full support of the Yugoslav government. IZIIS’s additional goals included facilitating research in seismology and earthquake engineering, providing advanced educational programs such as master's and PhD degrees, and offering professional training for civil engineers, architects, and planners, all focused on improving earthquake resilience. Over time, IZIIS has become one of the leading centers for earthquake engineering, not only in Yugoslavia but also globally. #earthobservation #SeismicResearch #Innovation #earthquakes #businesscontinuity #seismology #earthsciences #earthquakeengineering #tsunamiwarning #volcanomonitoring #civildefense
On this day, July 26, we remember the tragic earthquake that struck Skopje in 1963. This disaster reshaped our city, our lives, and our understanding of the importance of being prepared. By investing in prevention and preparedness, we prevent natural hazards from turning into disasters. Skopje 1963—never to be repeated, but also never to be forgotten. Let's honor the past by building a safer future together. 🌍 #Skopje1963 #IZIIS #NeverForget #DisasterPreparedness #InvestInPrevention #Resilience

🙏 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥-𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐚𝐢𝐰𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐉𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧 🙏 Today, our hearts are heavy as we learn about the devastating earthquake that struck Taiwan. The magnitude 7.5 quake, centered off the coast of Hualien in Taiwan, has caused widespread destruction, dangerously tilting buildings and claiming the lives of 9 people with over 800 injured so far. This marks the strongest earthquake in 25 years for the region. In Japan, the situation is equally dire. Tsunami warnings were issued, and waves as high as 30 centimeters have already hit the shore. Our thoughts are with those affected, and we hope for swift rescue efforts and safety for all. Let us come together as a global community, sending our prayers and positive energy to those impacted by this natural disaster. May strength, resilience, and support surround the people of Taiwan and Japan during this challenging time🌏🌟. #TaiwanEarthquake #PrayersForTaiwanAndJapan #GlobalSolidarity #NaturalDisaster #SupportTaiwan #SupportJapan #EarthquakeRelief #CommunitySupport #StrengthInUnity #ThoughtsAndPrayers #HumanitarianAid #GlobalCommunity #Resilience #HopeForTaiwanAndJapan #DisasterRecovery #TogetherStronger #SendingLoveAndSupport

Today is day 3 of Exercise Rū Whenua! NEMA and representatives from agencies and NGOs across New Zealand, as well as international guests, are gathered to discuss, plan and prepare to recover from an Alpine Fault magnitude 8 earthquake. Day 3 is focused on the Recovery following an event like an AF8 earthquake. It is about asking participants to consider what the situation would be like 6 weeks after the initial earthquake. What are the impacts on New Zealand’s social, economic, built and natural environments? And how do we make sure we’re ready to recover from an event of this scale? It was a real privilege to attend day 3 (recovery) of the Rū Whenau exercise in Wellington last week. The exercise was based around an Alpine Fault magnitude 8 earthquake and and to see NEMA taking a lead role in developing thinking around long term recovery is very welcome (this is the first such meeting that has taken place in Aotearoa New Zealand). However, the event was also sobering. The amount of work required to develop effective pre-event plans for recovery is extensive and such planning is in its infancy. This is particularly true when it comes to the legal frameworks needed to manage and implement recovery as well make the hard strategic decisions that will be required. These decisions will impact Aotearoa New Zealand for generations after the event occurs and the time to prepare for them is now, not in the challenging environment that will inevitably follow an event like this. The scientists have given us the information so we know what will occur. This is not a black swan event. We know that it will happen in the not too distant future and we (roughly) know the consequences. If we fail to prepare for it (and that includes the legal frameworks needed) we as a nation will have no one to blame but ourselves. We will have chosen the path of disaster. This event reminds us that it doesn’t have to be that way. We can chose a different path, but the clock is ticking…
